Which should I get first? CPU or GPU

If i get the i7 6700k how long do you think it would last in the long run for gaming and productivity and when is kabylake even coming out and if there even a big difference compaired to skylake?

the 6700K will last you for about 5 years-ish, or more, depending on your needs and how the industry evolves

intel havent been increasing it's performance by a lot for each generation gap, so i expect to not see much out of kabylake (it might still be 6th gen too for all we know, just better chips maybe)

Hey, guys! this is my first topic on this.

Because I have money now, I'm planning to upgrade my PC build because I'm starting to see some lag on new games, also, this summer I would be doing a lot of video editing and photoshop with friends this summer, so I need a computer that would last me around 5/6 years. My current build is an Athlon X4 860K, GTX 750Ti, 8GB RAM with 500W PSU (its my first ever build, I was on a tight budget).

I'm considering doing an intel build with an i7 6700k (not planning to overclock yet) Asus z170 a, 16gb ram along with an AIO cooler which all totals to £520 = $747 USD this is the cost I want to spend at the moment.

With my build, I want the new GTX 1070 if it gets good reviews in the future. What do you guys think I should buy first? the CPU and motherboard or the Graphics card and the PSU when it comes out.

If I buy the gtx 1070 first, along with a beefier PSU , then I would have to put that on my current build which would bottleneck the hell out of the GPU. If I bought the CPU and motherboard and ram, I would have to put my old GTX 750ti on that, either way, I know I'm going to get a huge bottleneck but at least they are temporary, so what do you guys think I should buy first? Or do you guys have any other suggestion?

thanks guys! ^_^

psu -> cpu + mobo + ram -> gpu

edit:

my recommendation

PSU: EVGA G2 550W, excellent psu for your rig that is soon to be high end soon with 6700k + gtx 1070 (potentially)

CPU + mobo + RAM: i5 6600K, Z170 mobo, 2x8gb 2666mhz or higher ram, get the i7 6700K if you want the extra hyperthreading

GPU: depends on when you're buying your gpu, AMD might release the 1070's competitor by then ;)

No? That's extreme overkill. Especially if Pascal delivers on the power consumption promises: it'll just be EVEN MOAR overkill.

a seasonic 520w would be more then enough for a 1080 or a 1070

Really overkill, 500-550 is more than enough.

Also if you only plan on gaming, just get 8GB, will save up for you a little if you need the money.

Actually, if he was going to do this in a 2 part upgrade (say, get half the parts now and the rest by the end of the year), I'd actually get the GPU right now. Even with bottleneck, it's still usable.

That way, Zen / Kaby Lake are a possibility.

stick with the 6700k for the architecture inre to the work you will be doing. and I've said it in the past about dual cores, now I'll say it about quads........... don't piss money away on something that AL:READY, even for gaming, is fast becoming a dinosaur. ( probably get ripped for that )

buy the cpu/mobo/ram first. and buy it together. the card you want will be less expensive as things settle down.

True but then he may as well wait until Kaby Lake and Zen drop (saving up more money in the meantime), get them and by then Polaris will have dropped and the GTX 1080 will have been out for a while which is always a good thing for prices...

well if he buy the gpu now, he would be missing out on polaris

if he buys the cpu now, he's missing out on zen and potentially kabylake (though i suspect zen wont be better than skylake but only time can tell :P)

so, yea. it depends which one he wants first

i picked cpu because it's less likely to become obsolete sooner than the gpu does

true, he should wait what polaris has to offer before jumping on the bandwagon

Your logic is wrong... The big pc part manufacturers release products every 1 1/2 - 2 years... Take nvidia for example. 970 launch was in june 2014, 1070 launch:june 2016

I would get the psu and gpu first.  Theat way you will still be getting more fps than you are now whereas if you get the cpu,  you will have the same fps but a faster pc for multitasking.

Asus Zenith III Extreme

How much difference would Kaby lake be compared with skylake anyway? and yes i may as well wait for polaris
