Im looking for a cpu to replace my old Sempron 3100+ so anything better than it that fits in the Socket 754 would do, im trying to find one for low cost and decent performance so I can turn this into a Nas.

Socket 754 is 13 years old and based off of 90nm technology, and go up to 2.4GHz, it frankly wouldn't be worth it to upgrade that, I would suggest an embedded cpu, or a intel pentium g4400.

The fastest you can go is a 3700+, but the performance of it will be nowhere near decent, and will be limited by sata I, and ddr memory.

Yeah it should do fine for a storage nas though im not worried for getting high transfer rates since its just for pictures and files for the most part.

As mentioned the Athlon 64 3700+ is probably the best you can get for Socket 754.

  • 2.4 GHz, Single-Core (versus 1.8 GHz)
  • 1MB of L2 cache (versus 256 KB)
  • 130 nm "ClawHammer", 89W TDP  Part Numbers ADA3700AEP5AR or ADA3700BOX

Just keep in mind the Athlon 64 3700+ came in several different revisions. The "ClawHammer" variant is the only for compatible for Socket 754. The other ones are either Socket 939 or AM2.
