High CPU usage

TheGameqt

Hi^^

(Using i5470 on Windows 7)

I just realised a problem I've been having for a long period of time. My cpu usage was always at about 40 to 50%, even if there were no programms running. I never questioned why (kind of a dumb move) and used to live with that but I began investigating a few hours ago and I found the source of the problem. It is actually the cmd.exe which seems to start with windows. It appears to be the "legit" cmd.exe as it is found in the System32 folder. I can manually exit the process and the high cpu usage ends (without any other problems appearing).

Do you know how to fix this issue? I am now scanning my complete system with avast to make sure it is not a virus, because I've read that the high CPU usage by cmd.exe is often a virus.

At the risk of bringing myself into some kind of trouble I've got to admit that my windows is only 80% legit.^^ I had to re-use the product key that was glued to my old laptop (I didn't want to buy windows a second time :S) This actually worked great for a long time until there were verification issues after several months. So a friend helped me with using some kind of windows unlocker to get rid of this and my guess is that the problem with the high cpu usage has got something to do with that...

It would be great if anyone knows a little workaround, because I hate reinstalling my complete system...

~Chris

First Buy a genuine license of Windows, as you have 0 excuse. Don't say that you can't afford, not with your PC, let alone you can afford 60-80$ games that are, most of them, a few hours long. While Windows, being only 100$ which lasts you 3 to 6 years depending on when you want to upgrade, and OPERATES YOUR SYSTEM, and use it every day, for hours on end. The most important piece of software, the most complex. If you do a comparison between complexity of software and cost, Windows is basically almost free, not to mention the continuous support  with weekly updates. We are lucky to even get a patch for games these days, let alone a good one.

Non-legit version of Windows can contain malware, spyware such as key loggers, that are 100% undetectable by any software you try and run and remove as they are baked in the OS. File are modified to be part of the OS, so any security software can't detect anything. It can also run at boot level, so that means that it has supervisor permission from the CPU, and the OS is just a puppet to it, and at this point, considering what you do with your computer, I would seek identity protection, and not trust a single byte coming out of the your system. (A reason why Microsoft pushed for Secure Boot for modern system with UEFI, as it blocks such exploits)

Buy genuine, scan all your data for malware and viruses and spyware, clean install, and stop wasting peoples time.

The Windows Unlocker software may have sneaked a Trojan into your computer.

Do a scan with Malwarebytes to pick up anything Avast didn't.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

All I could say is that your CPU is a bit outdated and it's struggling to keep up with current times (I doubt this), but if it is always at 40-50% I would say to keep scanning your PC for any viruses.

Thanks, going to try the malware removal tool.

Sounds like its infected as GoodBytes pointed out.

This is very common with the pirated pre-activated releases you find out there. Why do you think they spend hours on cracking and packaging these builds?

cmd.exe should not be running by default on a proper version of Windows.

please just get a legit freaking copy of windows. like seriously. just do it. its probably something that was glued with your windows ISO so it might not go away no matter what you do with software.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Did you use a injector or a patcher of some sort when installing Windows initially?

I was able to install windows from my usb stick and could use the old product key I already had. Everything was working fine until I got the message that Windows was not genuine (couple of months later) and then my friend used a patcher to get rid of this.

Get a new friend. A good friend would told you to do the phone activation, and Microsoft would have given you an override code, and all would be well. The call takes 2min, like you can time it. The phone number is a toll free 1-800, with 0 waiting.

Now you have to hope that Microsoft didn't black listed your key.
