molex to 4 pin adapter good?

Hey guys,

when Pascal will be released I plan on getting a second (maybe used) GTX 960 (I currently have a Gigabyte OC Windforce 4gb) to run SLI. I actually like Gigabyte cards and would like to pick up a G1 Gaming 4gb version if I get it for a decent price.

My problem: On my PSU I only have a 6+2 pin connector left but the G1 card needs 2x 6pin (for whatever reason, my current GTX 960 needs just one of them and is overclocked). I once heard about Molex to pcie adapters (I have 3 Molex connectors left on the PSU). BTW I have a Corsair VS650 (I know it's not the greatest PSU...).

My first question: Should I use them or are they risky in any way?

Second question: Should I just get a Molex to 4pin or is there anything wrong with that?

Already thanks to all of you :)

Is your psu modular?

1)650 watts is probalby not enough for 2 graphics cards.

2) you cannot sli with 2 graphics cards that arent the exact same

3) if you still want it do a 2 molex to 4 pin/ 6pin.

Should be an easy fix. If you have a free slot on your psu just buy one of these:

1) 650 watts are enough for two 980s

2) The cards have the same die, and Vram, so they can be SLIed

650w is more than enough for 2 gtx 960's.

you can use them, though not recommended

just make sure your psu's 12V rail can supply enough wattage

and that any conversion you do, the supplying wattage is larger than the one that is consuming

2x molex/sata to 1x 6 pin

you cant use the 6+2pin's 2 pin to power the next socket, it doesnt work that way

for more info

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html

though i recommend you sell your 960 and grab a higher end single gpu

it'll save you so much trouble

1) 650W for two 960? probably fine tbh. but his psu is not the best so i dunno

2) for nvidia, just have to have the same gpu core (960), same amount of vram (4gb), and have sli fingers (some custom gpu doesnt iirc). you can mix manufacturing brands, though it'll look weird

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

seems weird but ill take that. my general consent is leave 50 - 100 watts left for overclocking/loads.

that seems sketchy as hell.

two 960 consumes about 300W underload (realistically should be less)

so you have about 350W for the rest of the rig, as well as a ton of OC headroom

well considering gm206 is basically half a gtx 980 (gm 204) (this is  a VERY ROUGH ESTIMATE ) , and a gtx 980 runs fine on 500w . he should have no issues. Even a 390 works on 600w , and that uses a lot more power than 960 sli
