Hello. I've just purchased a pair of Beyerdynamic costom one pro's and am wondering if there is any point in investing in a Dac or sound card? I am running a Gigabyte Z77 UD5H with a Realtek ALC898 codec as the onboard audio on this board. I'm not keen on spending extra money if either of these choices aren't going to have notisible improvements.

nah, if you read my review which is floating around on this board somewhere you'll see how they're specifically designed for low power applications like your onboard chipset or a smartphone.

"Pardon my French but this is just about the most ignorant blanket statement I've ever read. And though this is the internet, I'm not even exaggerating."

It's only a 16ohm headphone so you'll be perfectly fine.

Anything that's maybe 64ohm or higher you might wish to buy a sound card or dac that has an amp.

Alright! Thanks for the replies. I'm probably not gonna throw away money on a sound card.

That's a little crude of a fashion to put it across. You think soundcards are a waste don't u

You don't, but if you get a decent soundcard/DAC, you will notice a difference in the dynamic range and tonality of the sound, especially through a decent pair of cans like those. Gives a richer sound.

I certainly missed the hell out of my Motu 8Pre when I was away and had to use on board audio. Can't wait to get my BD 770 Pro's back as well! :)

I also plan on picking up some LCD2's if I can find a good used pair.

Nice. I have some Canon one. I think it's the 1100D, can't remember.
