GPU Compatibility Issues?

Hopefully you find out whether or not its the PSU, graphics card (if it was the motherboard it wouldn't be working at all).

Indeed, this has been a hassle for way too long. Thank you all for your help, I appreciate it.

So I've been having an issue for about a month now concerning MSI RMA'd GPU's. My R9 270 starting showing green and gray lines when I tried to play any game, I was still under warranty so I requested an RMA. MSI no longer makes the R9 270 so they instead sent me an R9 380 (basically the same card but with Twin Frozr V and DirectX 12 support). Within 20 minutes of gameplay on ANY game (Tested on Dark Souls 3 minimum settings, Ori and the Blind Forest Max, and Rocket League) my entire screen would go blank and the card would be whirring extremely loud. I opened up my case and the card was burning to the touch. I checked my wiring, made sure it was seated correctly, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, tried another monitor, tried another HDMI cable, but got the same result each time. So I had to send back this card and try to get another one, in the meantime I used an AMD Radeon 7770 for about 3 weeks, and even swapped to a GTX 760 for a few days, waiting to receive my new replacement, the 7770 and 760 worked perfectly, although with considerably less FPS and playing on low on more than half of my games, it was 100% playable. Today I got the new R9 380 and yet again, I've run into the same problem, it's even worse than before, I couldn't go 10 minutes idle without my screen flickering and tearing and eventually going black and the card being extremely hot. I talked with support and he just told me to recheck everything and make sure to update my BIOS and motherboard drivers. I did everything he said with no improvements. I went on MSI's website and took a look at the compatibility chart listed for my motherboard, the MSI Z97 PCMATE. This chart doesn't include the R9 380 in its list. Is this the problem? Is the R9 380 doing this because it literally can't run on my motherboard? I tried other forums that had the same question but many were saying that since it's the same company and albeit an older motherboard, everything should work perfectly fine. I come to you guys until the support business hours of MSI are open.

All boards work with all GPUs (assuming PCIe 2.0 or later) - your issue is most likely either a PSU problem or you haven't removed the old drivers with DDU

Try out the Msi afterburner software you'll see how hot the card runs and you can try to put the gpu fans to 100% and try to play see if it still heats up much you can  also see if the fans start spinning when putting the fans on. Otherwise it sounds like a psu problem indeed.  The r9  cards often require a  lot more power than the other cards you tested it with. What psu do you have?

The 760 actually uses more power than all those cards so there should be no reason for this behaviour to be due to power draw

Actually the 380 uses a bit more power than the 760 but it shouldn't be a problem considering the 750w psu. The only thing I can think of is the Mobo then. It could be a loose pcie but considering other cards worked with it I don't think it's that either

My best guess is that his drivers are a mess due to the Nvidia GPU (I doubt he used DDU)

Corsair CX750 Semi-Modular Bronze Certified

If it's older than 2-3 years it might be defective. CX are generally quite crappy. Before you junk the PSU though, use DDU to remove all drivers (both AMD and Nvidia) and install 16.4.2

lets rule things out until there is only one thing left basically it shouldnt be the PSU if the gtx 760 worked and it shouldnt be the mobo either because the 7770 worked and as he had different r9 cards (270,380) it cant be the card itself either so that leaves what, cpu? it doesnt cause that kinds of problems so therefor I must agree it has to be a software issue.

Either software or there's something awry with the PSU's voltage.

I suppose now is the time to test the R9 380 again. It feels bad every time because watching my screen literally go to shit when I'm not even moving the mouse sucks. Hoping for the best. I will install the card and then let it run idle for maybe 15 minutes and then attempt to run Dark Souls 3 for however long I can until something bad happens or nothing happens at all.

Anything else I should be doing before I do this or during?

Test with Unigine Valley - Dark Souls 3 is wonky currently (for me anyway)

I was actually going to put a answer up in regards to the PSU, as I've found that with older cards at least, if the 5V rail (12V rail on a 650W and 850W PSU is always overkill-or it is with decent PSU) isn't high enough, then the graphics cards get really hot and lock up within 5-10 minutes, where as if I reduce the power consumption of the rest of the system, any graphics card is fine (normally reduced power =sound card+NIC+1xHDD+1xODD only, and occasionally a CPU downclock).
