Hey guys,

Wanna start messing around with some Thin clients for a POC for work.

Really like the idea of the Dell Models when the thin client is built into the screen, basically a AIO without the stupidly high cost and lack of performance.

So looks like i'll be trying the Wyse thin clients. Anyone worked with them ?

How you find them ? will need to run a W7 os so debating between that or the vWorkspace.

Having used a thin client for several years at work I despise them too. They are soo unbelievably slow. Building a really cheap normal desktop is just as cheap and faster. I guess you can make them work though with a powerful server and network backing them up but its still not a good option in my honest opinion.

I once explained to my girlfriend what true love is. I said, "If you were a shit, I'd put you back in" and to this day, she is still my little shit.

I have used them.   Yes they suck for people like us.  However from a business point of view they are great.   Inexpensive, flexible and easy to replace.  Almost 0 Downtime if one does fail.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

My last place of work had Wyse boxes and binned them all because they were so slow and bad.
The eventually replaced them with a VMWare based thin client product with a very expensive hardware backend and they were admittedly excellent - flawless, in fact. I still didn't like them though, but only because I wanted to install my own software.

I think thin clients are only good if you're willing to invest a lot of money in infrastructure - if you don't have a powerful set of servers delivering to clients over robust, gigabit or better network connections then you'll run into issues.

My last work place had them set up connecting to a Citrix Farm. Never had any issues with users reporting them going slow besides server side issues. Because really besides connecting to a server what else really does the Thin Client do?

As with all things if set up correctly should work a treat, Just when i was leaving they was moving from Citrix to WTS and buying replacement units.

Far as I can tell vWorkspace is no longer in development and is only receiving maintenance updates. Could be wrong though, website isn't super clear on it's status. Thin clients connected to RDS farm using RemoteFX does give excellent performance and if you need a bit more 3D grunt you can step further in to VDI and put graphics cards in to the servers and share them between VMs. RemoteFX is still used to connect to the VM (It's just an extension to RDC).

The other VDI tool I've tested a bit is VMware Horizon (Horizon View at the time). Impressive software with class leading management features etc, the only down side is the 3D configuration is much more expensive to setup (HCL) and just doesn't perform quiet as well as RemoteFX or Citrix. You would use Horizon for other reasons than 3D applications like CAD though you just need to know which solution is right for you. Also the cost is obviously much higher.
