what should i go for and also what are the differences in the two mobos.

asus Z170 A

asus Z170 pro gaming ?

the pro gaming has a bit better audio (only usefull for high impedance headphones), more usb ports and better power delivery to the cpu. therefore the z170-a has thunderbolt 2

would i need thunderbolt 2 ?

first pc build sorry

Unless you have any T2 devices, like a Thunderbolt storage device, monitor, audio interface or something like that, no you don't.

No offence, but it does sound like you're not too knowledgeable about these things and you might be much better off with a more mid-range board instead of paying a premium for something you don't need and has all these functions you'll never use.

In other words, a 'pro gaming' motherboard won't get you better performance, just more bells and whistles.

Does you mum know you're here?
