what port is the cable plugged in to?
have ye tested the card on another pc? (the card might not be in too good shape)
has he had ESD on the parts?
has he had any power outages?
what PSU does he have?

dvi port also did this with hdmi too he has the corsair CX750 and as he lives in the same house as me there has been no power outages. i dont think he has had any ESD unless it happened when his friend was messing with his pc but it was doing it before his friend even touched his pc so i doubt it was that and have not tested the card on a 2nd pc

could be a corrupt driver. if corrupt driver, use the APU and install driver. maybe let him borrow yer card untill he gets the driver and the whack in his card again.

I'm slightly worried that his old trooper might need new thermal paste

well after he gets the display it works good and temps arent high. just sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries to get it to display after first turning on his pc

might be a furped driver. try the card with another machine. if it works fine, it's his mobo or CPU ;)
