Os winndows 10 64 bit

I have not installed any software recently

Removed any programs lately? Have you checked the recycling bin? What were you doing before shutting down?

Files don't usually just vanish for no reason.

Drive should be fine. Do you know what files are missing and if how big they were? Check the recycling bin. Has your disk space usage changed. There are some programs that will scan for missing files.

I don't think i am missing big files and my binn is empty. what program will scan missing files?

try using r-tools. This is the download link http://www.r-studio.com/downloads/RStudioEmg7.exe. It should be able to get the files as when you delete a files it doesn't erase the file it just says the space on the disk is unused.
