Hello!

So I'll briefly go over the problem in case anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it without replacing my modem. If not, skip down to the TLDR section!

- Problem 1: So about a month ago I encountered a problem that happened sperattically throughout the day. for varying lengths of time ~3 minutes at a time, the entire houses internet would just disappear. (2 ethernet pc's, 1 wirelessly connected pc, and phones etc.) and then it would come back and act like nothing happened! This may happen every once and a while throughout the day, or in bursts for an hour or so.

- Problem 2: about three weeks ago I had mega packet loss for about three days. I suppose its unrelated but eh

- Problem 3: recently, for a bout three days I've been having a lot of problem #1, and then my skype call quality is reportedly low, coming from my friends, and I DC a lot from games such as arma, counterstrike etc. But, while all this is happening my upload and download speeds stay consitent on speedtest without any packet loss in CMD.

TLDR; I'm thinking about getting a new modem and I use three of the four ethernet ports on my current ones for 2 pcs, and a router. I want to buy an Arris SD6183 but it only has 1 outgoing ethernet port. What would be the best way to connect about 3pcs and another router to that while preserving the most speed. Would a switch work or would that decrease speed too much. Thanks in advance.

Cheers~

You can easily pick up a nice 8-port switch and connect that to the modem however the modem doesn't do NAT so you will need a router as well. Something like this:

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0XK-000W-00080

Should work just fine and allow you to connect all your devices and not cause any speed loss.

I think that's a bit overkill for the OP.

He'd be better off either getting the higher model Arris Modem that has an integrated router and 4-port switch, or going with the Arris SD6183 and a regular, good old fashioned 4-port Router (Eg: Netgear, ASUS, etc).

That Edge Router is SOHO business class. Not to say you can't use it for regular home consumer, but it's not catering to that crowd.

Alrighty, I mean I have multiple four port routers. But the thing is, that I have to have two routers in my house so if have to daisy chain in that situation. Would that impact speed? To have modem>router>router>pc

Please do elaborate why you have two routers in daisy chain? This is undesirable... pretty much, always. You're slowing your potential network speed, by applying NAT twice.

If you're using one of the routers as simply a Wireless Access Point (WAP, or AP), then you need to disable routing functionality on one of them and use it as a dumb AP.

I see, well I'm not daisy chaining right now. My current situation is that my modem is a router/modem combo, and the router capabilities of it covers the downstairs. Then, I have another router that goes upstairs. See, if I wanted to not have a switch, I would have to have one router connected to the new modem downstairs, and then the router upstairs would have to be daisy chained to that. That is why I think i should get a switch...
