Hey guys!

First time posting on a forum, but I cant find any info to help me. I recently built a PC with a GTX 980ti and a FX 9590. I noticed that I wasn't getting the fps I was seeing in benchmarks of certain games, and in fact I was getting much worse. In GTA V at 1080p, I was struggling to reach 40 fps and quite often I would dip into single digits. This is the exact same for most other games I play (Rust, Darksouls III, League of Legends, Metro 2033, Tomb Raider 2013, Fallout 4 etc.) all at 1080p with refresh rate of 59Hz. I tried everything I could find including temp checks, usage, overclocking, Nvidia Control Panel settings, driver wipe/reinstall, and even an OS reinstall, but nothing has helped! Even odder, A friend of mine with a 970 and i7 4790k outperforms me in the same games by 30-40 fps at the same resolution and refresh rate. Im not sure what to do, so what gives?

Thanks for your time, everyone!

<>My Specs<>

CPU: AMD FX 9590

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX

GPU: Gygabite Windforce GTX 980ti

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0

RAM: Corsair 16Gb DDR3

Storage: WD Black 1 TB

PSU: Raidmaxx 730W

actually, you motherboard and power supply may be inadequate for an fx 9590, they use a metric ton of power

put your 980ti in your friend's rig and see if it does the same there, if it does you have a bad 980ti

Okay, I'll try that, thanks! If it does the same that means its a bad card like you said, but what if it acts how it should?

It means your CPU is horrible (which it is, sorry) and you need something better.

I have a good feeling it is your CPU and its bottlenecking your card.

System Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X

GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XT

RAM: 32GB 3600MHz

HDD: 1TB Sabrent NVMe -  WD 1TB Black - WD 2TB Green -  WD 4TB Blue

No worries. You won't regret getting an Intel cpu. If you are looking to replace mobo/psu/cpu perhaps a 6600k or 6700k and a nice Z170 mobo. As for Psu with all the new power efficient chips coming out I'm not sure you'd need much more than 750, just grab a gold + with 12v rail :)

On Asus' website, it says your motherboard supports CPUs up to 140W, the 9590 has a tdp of 220W, the motherboard is most likely throttling to save itself. You could potentially get better performance by underclocking/undervolting your cpu, so it doesn't throttle anymore, which is probably the cause of those single digit fps.
