So here is the deal,

I m building a relatively high end system for an important guy. The budget is large though not unlimited.

I m kinda done but not yet decided on the gpu. The initial plan was an evga 980ti with the life overclocked out of it. But it seems the newer 1080 gtx is not just hype though I believe the actual performance will be closer to 10-15% over the 980ti for gaming especially for the average system it ll go in. I doubt nvidia would render obsolete their entire maxwell line already price and performance wise. But who doesn't like a newer and more efficient chip...

The problem is, I got a deadline that could at best be extended to the middle of June. So, what are the odds we ll be able to grab the third party iterations such as msi and evga's by then? Would evga's step up program(aka grab an applicable 980ti, get it approved, ship it back when evga 1080 is out and pay the difference) be a good idea? Anyone used it?

The system ll be more than capable of handling 1 even 2 more 980ti's in the future should their price plummets. Any features or tangible benefits in the newer chips other than efficiency and performance I should be aware of?

Nvidia claims that the 1080 will perform significantly better than the Titan X. Get the 1080.

Don't plan on SLI or any multi gpu, it's really horrendous and the support isn't there ( if it's a system for an important person )

I was aware of that but I was under the impression most of the issues have been sorted out more or less. Though I m a single card guy myself tbh. Unfortunately the deadline kinda screws stuff up so it might force my hands though it ll be indeed silly so I m kinda trying to make the best of out the situation. Yeah he's not the secretary of defense but I d rather not have him like "hey, why I dropped 700 bucks on an obsolete card?"

So something else guys since I have not been following closely the enthusiasts world the last years. Whats the usual time between the release(end of May) and start seeing the third party versions? What was the case with maxwell if anyone remembers...

Not really, a lot of games don't support it (support has to be implemented by the developer of a game).

Those that DO support it work pretty well though.

If I was your client, I'd say that sli 980 ti's is fine, if there's a deadline.

You might suggest to him/her that waiting for the 1080 will be totally worth it though
