R9 280 getting up to 85°C while gaming, normal?

JorenBus

So when I'm playing overwatch or star wars battlefront, my GPU gets up to 85°C. This is with a heavy overclock, but when I reset it back to default, it still gets up to 83°C.

Is this normal? Will this damage my GPU?

Thanks

GPU usage? Ambiental temps? Manufacturer? Exact model?

It should be fine at 85C, as long as it doesn't go any closer to 90C

What sort off cooler are you running on it? What brand?

And just going off the cards model alone it is fairly normal to see AMD 200 series GPU's to be running hot. It sort of a running joke in the forum community.

If it really does bother you, consider doing a TIM swap (thermal Interface Material) new thermal compound should drop your Temps by 5 or so degrees.

Hell no - 85*C is the maximum safe for Tahiti - it should be running at 70*C

Only the reference 290(X) ran hot - the rest run quite cool (my 280 runs at 69*C)

Sounds silly, but make sure that your GPU fans are actually running at 100%- even if software shows it, have a physical peek and see if you might need to lubricate the fans.

Right now it's around 20° in my room, so nothing too special.

It's an MSI R9 280.

The airflow in my case isn't the best either, but still, 85° is kinda hot right.

85*C is *too* hot. It should be around 75*C. Question, have you updated the vBIOS or anything? Also try lowering the voltage a bit - MSI cards usually come overvolted

Alright thanks for the help, apparently this isn't normal.

Should I try to RMA it and possibly get a 380 in return? What do you guys think?

Picture of your case please.

An OEM case like this has very minimal airflow. You can check by stressing your GPU without the side panel.

If my Msi r9 280x has a max load temp of 68*C OC'd to 1120Mhz in a 30*C ambient temp. Don't see why yours should hit 83*C.

Edit: Just to further stress how bad airflow in OEM cases are. I also have a second build with a r7 265 inside one of those OEM acer cases. Temps will shoot up to 75*C when stressing with valley. All I took is just one fan in the front of my gpu to drop the temp to 65*C.

Don't underestimate how bad airflow can be in those cases.

I run a Gigabyte Windforce R9 280.  The stock clock is 1070MHz and I push it oto 1150MHz for intense games like Dying Light.  I don't think I have ever seen it at 80+ degrees...

I am curious now, might try some synthetics to push the temps up.

Note:  I have a shit ton of airflow, and a bare open case.  No HDD cages or anything:

Two 140mm intakes.

Two 120mm intakes.

One 140mm exhausts.

Two 120mm exhausts.

When I pump up my clocks, I turn up my fans as well.

Find the cheapest open style case... Thermaltake Versa models are usually cheap.  You would need dust filters for the versa though.  You can make them.

I would probably even cut out the hard drive cages on this, if I did not need them... which I don't.

Well, Just as I expected.

Before you start considering other cases. Do you have a spare fan lying around? Does need to be a case fan. Just a fan that can be plugged into the motherboard.

What worked for me might work for you for the time being.

What about the Z9 Neo? Might as well get a decent case then.

Well I was planning on buying a new case anyway. Is the N9 Neo decent? It's around €70 in my region and seems pretty nice.

I have a mATX motherboard, but that will fit in that case no problem right?

Cheap is cheap.  How much are the cheaper cases like the Versa?

I don't like solid front panels personally, but some cases still get decent airflow.

If you want a good case, check out the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M.  Should be around 100 Euros + the cost of two 140mm fans for the front.

Well I was planning on buying a new case anyway. Is the N9 Neo decent? It's around €70 in my region and seems pretty nice.

I have a mATX motherboard, but that will fit in that case no problem right?

HardwareCanucks seem to like that case.

http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?Idx=975 Product manual does show support for M-ATX mother boards.

Oh and please do consider buying a new PSU as well
