Hello everyone,

I'm currently slowly planning to upgrade my rig. The way it is now:

NZXT S340

CoolerMaster GM750M

MSI 970 Gaming (mobo, not GTX 970 :p)

AMD FX-6350 (4.6GHz)

Kingston HyperX 16GB 2x8GB 1.866

Gigabyte R9 380 G1 Gaming (1100Mhz core, 1500Mhz Mem)
CoolerMaster Nepton 240m (with NF-F12)

Samsung 580 Evo 250GB

2x Bitfenix Spectre Pro Fan (not really happy with these, because LED Fan)

Iiyama Prolite 24" 1920*1200 60Hz IPS

This platform is really getting old now so that's the first thing I'd like to upgrade. I probably need to spread the buying over a few months but the parts i'm looking at are:

Intel Core i5-6600K (or i7-6700K, not sure yet)

Asrock Z-170 Extreme 4

Team Group Elite Plus 32GB Kit 4x8GB 2133

I'm not sure about going i5 or i7 yet. The i7 is about 120 euro's (Netherlands) more so I don't if I'd really need the HT. The pc wil mostly be used for my photography, some video editing and I like to game sometimes (GTA V, Hitman, Assassins Creed, CS:GO).

The games I play are usually not too heavy so at first I'd plan on keeping the rest of the system the same and when VR drops in price I'm gonna need to upgrade GPU. I'm also, for the time being happy with my monitor mostly for photo editing. Thought I really would like a 34" UltraWide.

Would love to get some input grom you guys on the i5 vs i7 and general idea about my plan.

Ohyea and the mobo + RAM because gold xD

EDIT: This would cost around €470, or 540 USD

Unless you're going to do some really heavy photo and video editing, an i5 will work fine, your general plan seems pretty good. as a fellow dutch person I recommend doing a price check on the site tweaker.net for everything you're planning to buy and not to try to focus on just these three/four components, especially read reviews of different motherboards to see what kind of issues people already have gotten with that motherboard so that you can improve your choice or not have the same issues in the first place.

Thx for the fast response. I figured a i5 should do the trick but keeping in mind I might want to go VR in the future (EVGA 980Ti Superclocked for more gold). I have a wishlist active on Tweakers.net.

I'll certainly check other boards too. These nicely fit my budget (mid/higer range with nice features but not overly expensive)

Why would you need 32gbs of RAM with an i5?

Don't bother with overclocking parts, the i7 6700 already turbos to 4ghz

the MSI VD and Gaming budget boards all have pretty solid power delivery and USB 3.1

PCPartPicker part list: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/NYmVqs

Really overclocking not worth it? My experience with my FX-6350 and a old Core 2 Quad Q-6600 did really benefit from overclocking and from watching linus and other guys I got the impression that 4.6 overclock on Skylake does help quite a lot.

I'll check. Thanks for your answer!

I would go with 32GB RAM because it's not that more expensive and RAMDISK can and has been something I actually do use. Until now I've always overclocked my cpu's (and gpu's) and always seen quite a lot of pay-off. has that dropped that much now?

Skylake can't really use DDR3, only DDR3L

i7 6700 already turbos to 4ghz, not worth the money for the extra 10% of performance

You could always upgrade to 32gbs later if you don't have the money for it now.

The K only costs 40 EU more, so that should be worth 10% to me I guess.

And indeed, i couldn't re-use my DDR3, and I'd like to do it properly, so DDR4

Probably ends up 100 EU more since you already have the cooler.

still probably better to throw that to your GPU upgrade when the new ones come in a few months or so

And I don't feel like going full budget. I can spend 40 or 50 more on some components if it helps. The K is about 40 EU more and the 32GB is also only 40 more then most 16GB kits.

And I also just like to overclock and get the best out of my parts

Yeah i'd kinda feel bad about slapping a dual 120 AIO Liquid on a non-K. That's just a bit of a waste. I think I wont be able to upgrade GPU for a little longer and for now I'm not unhappy about the R9 380. It's doing what It has to do for me

My main problem at least with the 6700K is that the 5820K generally costs as much, and then you only have to spend a little more on the motherboard and you get a much better platform and 6 core CPU, one that makes more sense to OC since the 5820K only turbos to 3.6ghz, so you'd get a larger performance jump from it

though from a quick glance the pricing is a little bit more in the EU, in the US both CPUs cost the same but still, it's better to go that route if you're going to spend that much money

if you considor how much extra you spend on overlockable parts these days its not worth it. just get more cores instead. there are some really good b150 boards out there.

If you only have a 1080p display there wouldn't be much reason to upgrade for a little while at least

I was considering going for a 5820K but for cpu+mobo+RAM it would easily cost about 100 to 150 EUR more in The Netherlands (no amazon :() and I guessed going for newest platform would benefit rendering and photoshop work. That's also why I chose 32GB Ram (I often edit huge amounts of RAW imagedata)
