Looking at 4k gaming..

ledwaan

Alright guys, I posted a topic yesterday about going to 1440p, I think i'll just go straight to 4k tbf and wait another month to save up some money, the monitor i'm looking at has to be 32 inch, anything less is to small for my room and anything bigger is to much and i'm only looking at 16:9

My rig is a GTX980 with an i7 4790k, I don't mind using medium settings as long as I'm getting 45fps plus, as this monitor comes with gync, also I use 1600mhz 16gb ram right now, would I need say 2400mhz ram for 4k?

So I found a monitor yesterday, any opinions on this?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Predator-XB321HK-Monitor-Adjustable/dp/B017U8Z61W/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1462194778&sr=1-4&keywords=4k+monitor+acer

Also how does 4k work with games a few years old that don't natively support it? just a quick ini tweak? the same for games from the early 2000's? thanks people

The only game I've had trouble with is KoTOR. It's worth checking widescreen gaming forum periodically for games like that though. That game has bigger issues now, though. I can't get it running at all on Windows 10.

980? Yeah, no. Go for 1440p at best.

Okay man thanks!

Why do you say that? I've seen many benchmarks at 4k on this card on medium settings, most games get around 45fps or more for a game a few years older, which are what I would play mostly, which I wouldn't mind with gync tbf

He says that because people have this absurd "ultra or nothing" stick up their arse when it comes to 4K, and only 4K for some reason.

Cause if a 980 Ti can't get 60fps stable at medium settings, you are looking at 40fps with frequent dips into the 30s or lower. Modern AAA releases won't run properly if at all - games like Witcher 3 will run at 30fps - you'd be shooting yourself in the leg.

freesync monitors are in general less expensive. you just have to look for that goes down to 30fps. maybe go with a fury x or wait for next gen if you want to save some money.

actually i would wait for next gen anyway.

Well honestly, I barely play new AAA releases, I mainly play games from a few years ago, I still need to play GTA 5 and ROTTR, which I wouldn't mind waiting for a new GPU release to get, but thanks for your opinion, makes this a lot harder to decide

I played ROTTR at 30fps - not exactly as fun as 60 on a 1440p screen. 1440p is already absurd pixel densitiy, 4K won't be a thing until Volta and GCN 5 since the newer cards will bring a 50% improvement, at best - still not enough to last a few years at 4K

GTA 5 isn't as demanding as people seem to think. It's pretty easy to maintain 60 fps at a mix of ultra, high and very high settings on a pair of 970s at 4K. A single 980 will easily play at medium settings.

This idea of the 980 Ti only managing 30fps at medium has been pulled completely from his arse tbh. Either that, or he is biased only towards looking at the most demanding games available to try and justify his point.

Nice try but you're putting words in my mouth - I said 980 Ti averages 60 at medium 4K.

The issue I have guys is that I wanna go to atleast 1440p, but then I don't wanna get a 1440p monitor for in a year or 2 to go to want to go to 4k, but maybe 1440p is the best option right now.

So how do games run at 1440p that don't support it natively? an ini tweak? should I upgrade my ram for 1440p?

16GB of 1600MHz DDR3 is all you need for 1440p Ultra. 980 is also a 1440p card so you can expect high-ultra 60fps

If you're forcing vsync on, you'd be correct. Otherwise that's not true.

Personally what I would do is I would get 4K now, play at mostly medium settings for a while, then as soon as Pascal is released and ebay is flooded with used 980s, go SLI and play at ultra 60fps.

Because 4K is not remotely broken and full of issues, nooooo, there's no tons of people reporting issues with SLI or CF....

He has a 980 Ti and before that has had an SLI config.

If you have a 1080p screen now and are looking at the options: a lot of games hide the resolutions you can't use... Most games support 1440p just fine.

1440p is a way to go now if you want something better than 1080p. There is no point on going to 4K. You will suffer performance drop completely inadequate to visual quality gain. Actually, to get any kind of playable experience at 4K, you will have to drop your settings so low that you will actually get lower visual quality than on 1440p. 4K is absolutely useless for gaming at this point. Maybe in early 2017 when the most powerful cards of new gen will come out, and you will get two of them and multi GPU will be well supported, but now it is pointless. You are only loosing by going to 4K.

Did you even read the part where OP said they don't play highly demanding, brand new AAA games? Even if that weren't the case, I would absolutely go 4K medium/high over 1440p ultra. And the fact that the 980 price is about to crash as Pascal is released making SLI stupidly affordable in a matter of months, foregoing 4K in favour of what was pretty decent back in 2011 is senseless.

Not sure dude, my friend says 4k at low looks better than 1440p at high, I wouldn't know, I don't play new AAA, I'm interested in a few yeh but I also don't mind waiting for the gpu refresh, I can't be assed to go 1440p to then consider wanting to go 4k in a few months if this gpu refresh is as big of a deal as Nvidia are making out
