I want to buy a new NAS - but it has to be totally silent - so no fan! - it has to run passively and this is also the reason i want use ssd s for the NAS (and i do not need huge storage space).
The NAS should be connected to a TPLink Archer C2 AC750-Dualband-Gigabit-WLAN-Router Archer C2 - Willkommen bei TP-LINK

Now i have found two models which might be the solution for me:
QNAP TS-228 NAS
Qnap HS-251+

Questions
1) My PC is connected to the router via WLAN - is this a problem performance-wise when i want to stream data (1080p) or use it as ftp-server? The pc is in the same room as the router, but LAN connection is impossible.
2) Which model of the two would you recommend for me?
3) Alternatives, other recommendations?

4) I have laying around a AKASA plato http://skinflint.co.uk/akasa-plato-a-nuc17-m1b-a1276691.html   and also 4GB SO-Dimm RAM... would you - instead of buying prebuild NAS - use those "left-overs" and buy a i3-nuc, m.2 and ssd and install FreeNAS? I have concerns that this might be a pain in the ass to get to work how intented...

hard drives produce some heat (not too much) so a nas will need to have a fan :)

The two models i have listed run without fan... there are a few NAS out there which run passively. And as i mentioned... this is also the reason i want to use ssds.

well, the most silent NAS is one that isnt in the room.

as for making a system silent, its easier than you'd think.

also, DO NOT go fanless, its a reipe for disaster. get at least one fan, and run it at 3 volts for all i care, but have it spin. i recently picked up a fractal design venturi fan for circulaing air in my server corner, and running it off 5 volts, and passing it trough the included low rpm adapter its still more than plenty for what my i7 based server can kick out heat-wise.

on top of that -with a propper mount- it is literally more silent than a regular laptop charger. yes my friend, a fan is more silent than a fanless device.

if you get a high quality fan, and mount it properly (noctua's rubber mounts are hilareously expensive but a really good example) you can have plenty of fans running while staying more quiet than some fanless systems.

--

same actually is true for hard drives, mount them properly, put some sound insulation around them, and they're pretty much dead silent, aside from maybe some soft clicketyclick when doing random access, which is honestly not noteworthy if you get a drive that's not a WD black :P

how would it be more silent than a fanless?

coil whine, and other general buzzy noises.

puget actually has a system they sent off to -intel i believe- for sound testing, and they found the loudest component in the system (with the noctua fans spinning btw) was a capacitor on the motherboard.

thats right... but coil whine and buzzy noises can also happen on active cooled components, right?

And if i am honest - i did not really want to have a discussion about silent servers/NAS/PC... regardless - thanks for the comments.

Hey cisto,

my advice would be to build a NAS on your own.

Mostly, that's a pretty good way to go and not too hard to do if you're a little bit into reading guides.

Depending on your situation, where the NAS is going to be, how big it can be and so on, you'd have do decide on your own, which compromises you do want to make.

I'd really recommend you to use some kind of fan or cooling in the system. It can be an ultra low spinning fan which - I guess - you won't hear ore something fancy. You can still of course go with passive cooling, but then you should really thing about building the NAS on your own.

You can throw whatever stroage you'd like in and you've got plenty of room on upgradability (not just one or two disks if more is needed).

Oh, and streaming the files off your PC is usally totally fine as long as the connection is. if it drops, the stream will obviously stutter and get pretty nasty. But since your WLAN AP is in the same room, there shouldn't be any problems.

But one final remark to add:

It seems that you plan to use the NAS just as output machine to connect a TV to or such. This is because who is using a NAS if he does not need any storage on it? Either you misunderstood the purpose of a NAS, or you're.. I don't know. Just don't buy one if you don't need it.

If this is true, and you just need a network receiver thingy, use something like an Arduino or a Raspberry PI. You can stream your media right off your PC onto your raspi and display the video output on your TV. Save's a lot of money with only little work.

I had the same issue as you. I built a FreeNAS box with AIO cooler master liquid cooler.

It's virtually silent.

QNAP is a good solution but you can pretty much do the same on FreeNAS and get the benefit on enterprise grade RAID
