Laptop for eGPU

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

Just the eGPU and the PSU + enclosure are over 1000$ so you have exactly 0 chances of finding such a combo

Good luck.

Good luck even finding a laptop with that cpu in it for 1100$

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

eGPU's are quite cheap. I built my GTX550Ti eGPU setup for less than 200€ in 2012. The GTX970 will be the most expensive component. The best thing to do is probably just to get a T420 or T430, upgrade it to a quad core and use the ExpressCard version of the eGPU adapter from hwtools.

A 950M outperforms a 550 Ti tho - a 960M is the same as a 750 Ti so the eGPU would be at LEAST 300$ to make it worth any form of effort (970 and even then the 980M matches it)

Back in 2012, a 960M or 750Ti didn't exist.

But it's 2016 now :P - and the 660M of the time was the same as a 550 Ti

Which is why OP wants a GTX970.

Which costs 350$ + 80$ for the PSU + 500$ for the enclosure for a total of 900$ making a laptop with a 980M better value

The "enclosure" only costs about 100$ including shipping. I paid 80$ for mine. OP might already have a PSU or could just get a cheaper one and save some money there. I suspect it won't cost more than 500$ for the entire eGPU setup, leaving him/her with more than enough to get a T420/T430, potentially with a quad core upgrade.

350$ 970, 80$ PSU, 80$ enclosure, 500$ T430 with a 3630QM/2630QM for a total of ~1100$. If you want a better screen, factor in another 150$ so 1000-1300$ (depending on prices). For 1300 you can get a 970M laptop like the GS60 Ghost Pro. I'd still buy the laptop

You just need to pick the right offers, then you can save a lot of money.

275$ for the 970: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GTX-970-4gb-SSC-/282022593367?hash=item41a9db4357:g:bk8AAOSwY3RXJQ-H

23$ for a 300W PSU: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antec-300W-Switching-Power-Supply-PP-303X-Tested-/322059557093?hash=item4afc3ed8e5:g:1-AAAOSwAvJW-~0i

60$ for the PE4H: http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PE4H%20V3.2.html

270$ for a T430 in excellent condition: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T430-14-Laptop-w-docking-station-/131797675555?hash=item1eafc0ee23:g:ukUAAOSwmmxW6dPo

140$ for a quad core: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-3630QM-Mobile-2-4Ghz-Quad-Core-CPU-SR0UX-6MB-G2-/391443928079?hash=item5b23e0540f:g:lowAAOSwM0FXIUIM

Adds up to 768$. You could probably spend another 30$ on a better PSU to round it off at 800$, but even a crappy PSU will be enough to power the eGPU reliably. At least it was enough for my setup.
