reinstall my windows in virtualbox

I'd like to install a linux distro (still have to choose which) on my laptop, over the current win10 install (win8 upgraded). But I don't want to lose windows and it's key, as I paid for it when buying the laptop.

Would it be possible to reinstall windows in virtualbox and use the previous key? (I might need windows-only software someday, that's why)

Normally, a windows 10 license purchased at a store would fine. You could re-use that key on any computer you so wish. Although only one at a time.

Unfortunately, in your case you upgraded from windows 8. Therefore, the license is linked to your motherboard and cannot be used on anything else than that motherboard. Trying to use it on a VM wouldn't work because it wouldn't see that very same motherboard because everything is virtualized.

sorry

there *are* ways of faking the used motherboard, but i'm not sure how difficult it is to do it to a point it'd validate the license.

at this point, I would just use the Windows 10 legit activation trick. Would be easier xD

Not worth the hassle. I'll stick with windows for some time (and maybe use linux in VM)

well, before mentioned method is actually really popular in the professional world, a lot of professional software ties itself to a specific piece of hardware like for example the MAC address of the network card.

which well.. if you run a VM thats an easy fix to carry over the license to a new box :P
