Laptop for CS major

So what would be the best laptop for a CS major at around a 1000 usd with a decent graphic card.

Well, a CS major would prioritize CPU and RAM for compile times...

 

Honestly a gaming laptop with an i7 will do fine.

I really dont know how mind will change but there must a setup thats decent enough

screen size? maximum weight?  I want to get this just right.

Depends on what you do in Computer Science. If you do game development.. then yea you need a dedicated GPU. If you do web dev, then a i3 or Core M is all you need. For software dev, a i5 CPU is plenty, you should be able to manage just fine with a Core M.

You wont be doing anything heavy.

 

If you don't do gaming, my suggestions is to get a Surface Pro with i5 CPU. The power of the device is the pen.

You type your notes, and when it comes with symbols, you have no problem in doing them.

 

I major in CS, I had a powerful laptop, and I got a Surface Pro 2... get a Surface Pro. While students will just give up, or use char map all the time and not listen to class, you just turn it in tablet mode, and write the symbol, or just stay with pen, all your notes are digitize, and nicely organized with OneNote.

Chances are the department will have machines you can SSH into, so you don't need a performant machine unless, as others have mentioned, you're doing game dev requiring a dedicated GPU.

when it comes to buying lenovo, be sure to go with a thinkpad, not an ideapad.  The IdeaPad line is cheaply made and don't last long.  But if you're looking for a laptop with a decent graphics card and good battery life, good luck buddy.  they're pretty hard to come by.

Its fine..maybe 6 hours. More if you switch it to stable mode while coding (which you should be doing)
