Hello fellow enthusiasts,

I have been planning for this gaming rig for a week or so now, and would like to have some advice from you guys before finalizing the parts and building it. As a avid hardcore gamer and a coder that designs the applications/websites, i would like if my rig could run virtual machines, AAA games at the highest settings and photoshop and illustrator without lag. It would also be cool if it can run in 4k or with 2 1080p monitors :) I will be overclocking this computer and would be running a 2-way SLI in the future. For now, this is how the rig looks: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YvpMGX

I am currently residing in Singapore, and EVGA parts are very rarely seen in my country, so i would be planning to get those EVGA hardwares from Amazon or Newegg. My budget for this rig is roughly 2500SGD. This budget is solely for the computer, however feel free to recommend me and peripherals :)

4k gaming not quite possible yet. And you´d want something like 980ti or Fury X for that. 390>970. Get a 980ti instead if you planned on sliing. Might be more worth just to wait for Polaris and Pascal though. Photoshop and such as well? Go X99 with 5820k.

4K is not happening with a 970, and i have heard that there are problems with 970 SLI so i wouldent do it. the PSU is way overkill to, get maby 650W or something if you want to be running SLI

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

4k gaming is not do-able for a gtx 970

a gtx 970 is best suited for 1080p for now

for 4K gaming, you'll need two 980Ti in SLI to push decent fps at decent settings in AAA titles

as for gaming, the i5 6600K will probably do the job, the extra cost of the extra threads arent worth the small improvement that you will see

though the i7 should help when DX12 gets mainstream, but not sure how long that will take lol

also, slightly overkill motherboard and psu u got there :D

and hello neighbour :D

Hi all, thanks for the kind replies. I am currently going for the GTX970 due to budget constraint. Would be getting one that is second-hand while waiting for the pascal 1080. As for PSU, i intend to get one that is 650W but a fellow HWZ(SG's tech forum) user advise to use a 850W one as the price is the same and Amazon recommended it for overclocking and SLI usage.

any z170 motherboard will do for skylake overclocking, if you're going black and red then msi and asus have plenty of cheaper options lol

and yuh msia :D

i suggest waiting for pascal/polaris and run your iGPU for now, save some $$ unless you're dying to game :P

850W is fine if you plan to SLI, but only SLI high end cards, dont SLI two lower tier card as SLI brings more cons than pros tbh

Thanks for advice :) any advice on how to choose a perfect motherboard? I am still relatively new to this. Will definitely be SLIing 2 high end card once i get enough budget for them. but for now, sticking with an individual 970.

think about what you want to connect (how many drives, do you need usb 3.1 etc etc)

and then find a few motherboard that supports all those things, then you're done

make sure its z170 chipset and its SLI/CF ready for overclocking and dual gpu compatible

i have done all those and come to the conclusion of getting the maximus VIII Hero, partly due to how it looks too :P

I have just done a quick look for similar ones, how do you think the MSI Z170 Gaming M5 and M7 fare against the Maximus VIII?

motherboards are pretty much the same

its the features + looks that matters, overclocking wise, your chip would be the major factor, motherboard not so much

as long as they do what you want, then they're all good

that said, i still like asus boards for the fan xpert software...
