So right now I want to upgrade my PC to improve video composing performance in After Effects. Right now I have:

16 GB of DDR3 RAM @ 1600mhz

i7-4790k no OC, I have a h87 chipset motherboard

1x 120gb SSD and 1x 1TB HDD (WD Blue).

Out of the 3 which upgrade would give me the best performance?

Note: I can't afford a 5930k and 5960x so 5820k would be the max for me.

Do you know if there is any video or article that shows the effects of OC in video editing?

Somewhere here (sorry I'm kinda busy so I don't know where it is and can't check right now)

if you have a i7-4790k go look for a z87 or z97 mobo and look for a support m.2 ssd.

i would recommend using main boot drive a Samsung 950 PRO 250GB  M.2 and a SSD 960GB for Mass Storage but HDD will do just be patient about moving files back and fort.

RAM would be fine for now but in the future if things get sluggish add another 16gb for 32gb

even in oc or not you purchase a CPU that is intended for overclocking and is just a waste not to push it alittle.

I cant say if OC will give more performance in video editing.

The power gained by the 2 extra cores of the 5820k will be very noticeable when encoding.  In order to switch from your 4790k to x99, you'll obviously need to replace the CPU, motherboard and RAM.

Is it worth it?  I say absolutely.  If you are going to be doing a considerable amount of work with video the 6 cores of a 5820k at stock speed are going to be considerably faster than an overclocked 4790k.  Overclock the 5820k and it gets even better.

You can still sell your 4790k for decent money so that should help bridge the gap in cost.  Or keep it for use as your main rig and offload your work to the x99 platform.
