Against school's policy maybe?

VPNs create a virtual network device on the computer itself. While it's probably easy enough to have the client program as a standalone on a thumb drive or something, you can't get around the fact that the virtual device has to be on the machine implemented in the OS. If the techs at your school are even kind of earning their pay, they'll have that part disabled.

Yeah I know, same thing happens in Edinburgh but in our school, if we are caught using a VPN, we will get our computer access suspended and more importantly, it can lead to a 7 day suspension (or exclusion...that's what everyone down in Lincolnshire calls it so...)  depending on what we were doing :/ (but I go to a private school so it's probably different...no hate pls)

Do you need a specific vpn or just a web proxy to get to blocked sites? the latter you just need to try several until you find one that the school doesn't block (I can use whoer.net) or hidemyass just try a few.

Up until this past month I could also use a portable tor client or chrome with betternet

If you need a vpn to connect to your home or something else its a bad idea since the school may keep logs, and either way any vpn you find that doesn't need admin rights, slips by the program block list, and doesn't use a blocked url/site/host will probably be sketchy but some like tunnel bear have chrome extensions you may be able to tag onto a portable chrome and use
