FRAPS Issues

Go to solution Solved by Helly,

Really? Nobody knows whats going on here and you just start screaming for him to use something else? The choppy playback is quite normal, it's because of the massive amount of data that is being read and the system can't keep up. It's not a problem, since the file is WAY to big to keep anyway you just need to re-encode it to something else. If you encode it with x264 at something like 11 000 to 15 000 bitrate. You'll shrink it down and you get WAY better quality then when you would have recorded it with OBS or shadowplay. That's because OBS uses settings to make the encoding go as fast as possible, sacrificing quality.

I record with fraps all the time and do the same thing. Yes it takes more time but the result (at least for me) is better then other solutions.

edit: Fraps is however outdated for resolutions above 1080p. 1440 is doable but the framerate drops by a lot more. 4K recording with fraps is IMPOSSIBLE. the program can't handle it and all performance just tanks. Doesn't matter if you write to an HDD or a PCI-E SSD, and i've tried both. OBS crashes as well when recording 4k, so that doesn't work either...

Hi all, i've been playing tf2 for a while and I want to start recording little frag movies. I consistently get around 100-200 fps while playing and i can usually get 120 while recording but when i finish recording and start watching back my film it is incredibly choppy and laggy. I have no idea as to why this is happening but it is. I'll include screenshots of my settings in case it has something to do with that. Thanks! :)

Edit* everyone says that i should just use Shadowplay. Probs will. thanks for all the help guys. :D

Use NVIDIA ShadowPlay instead, much better performance.

try turning down recording quality. issue is that games also take up cpu, so when you record at too high quality, cpu cant keep up so it drops frames

No, I only use FRAPS for its fps counter, I find the record functionality crap. And FRAPS gives me issues for csgo as well, so I don't really use it anymore.

If you right-click the file that FRAPS makes and go to properties, what FPS and resolution does it say?

EDIT: Oh, and shadowplay should solve the issue

In windows at least, you should be able to right click a video clip > properties > details

do you have an SSD? might be that an HDD cant keep up with a 120fps video recording

just use shadowplay, its way better

no i only have some shitty potato hhd

yeah well fraps makes huge files especially at 120fps

clearly your storage cant keep up

that means you either need to record at lower quality 30fps

or use shadowplay

Fuck this i'm just gonna use shadowplay. it seems that everyone says it is the best.

Edit* is it better that OBS?

No, there's a new version of OBS that uses the same encoder so you get similar performance with a ton more features

You still might not be able to record 120 FPS though

its a lot more simple to use and gets pretty much the same quality

try both and see what you like better

how exactly do you re-encode it?

Well i personally use MeGUI, which is a little complicated to setup. But really easy once thats done. You can use anything really, if you want to edit it you can use anything from windows movie maker to premiere pro. Which i have also done.

i use virtualDub to cut out the pieces i want to keep, then append them together. Put that into a avisynth script with MeGUI and encode it with x264.
