So I gave my step brother my 4790k and he is very happy with it but for some reason he can't get past a 4.8ghz overclock he is trying to go for a a #1 score in FutureMark benchmarks he is able to do 3 hours of aida 64 stress test with 4.8ghz 100baseclock 48 multiplier 1.305 volts and it doesn't even hit 72C when he is gaming it only huts 64C or less. He really wants to get a better overclock but he doesn't know how. Any ideas on what is causing this issue. He has an Asus z97 Pro Gamer mobo in case you need to know.

That's a great overclock, if he wants to push it even more temps will very quickly be his limiting factor as he is getting close to around 85C if he pushes it more.

4.8 is right around the upper limit of Haswell without pushing unsafe voltages

4.8 GHz is a decent overclock, and 1.3V is good too. Chips are not guaranteed to hit a certain frequency (silicon lottery), he may have just hit the capacity of the chip

You could try upping the voltage, but I wouldn't go above 1.3V for 24/7 use

he is perfectly fine with that but he wants to know how to get it higher also he managed to run a 4.8ghz overclock while at 1.345 volts. It never hit 89C and he said he was gaming and it was the same as his 1.305v temps. Still what is preventing him from getting past 4.8ghz?

He just wants to hit it for about an hour or two for  benchmark so he can get the top spot for a 4790k and gtx 980 ti system score

You can try going up to 1.4V and see what happens, just watch the temperatures

Silicon lottery will determine how well it can overclock and in this case temps which is the main thing, if he wants to push for 4.9Ghz usually you have to dump a lot more voltage into it which makes temps rise.

is there a temp where it can just "blow up" the cpu? By that I mean will going to 1.45 volts brick the cpu or mobo or something?

Try not to go over 90C, and for the voltage I personally would not go over 1.42/1.43, and if you do I wouldn't do it for that long

well he tried doing 4.9ghz at 1.35 or 1.36 volts either one I don't remember, but he said it would go through the boot and windows screen but as soon as he tried typing in his password it blue screened

As mentioned you can try giving it some more voltage but be mindful of temps, ~85C is usually where I would cut it off at. I wouldn't go past 1.4V though and not keep that as a daily overclock with that voltage, personally I tried for 4.9Ghz on mine and it wasn't worth the extra heat in my situation where it required around 1.35-1.37V.

:/ are you sure you want to go higher than that amount of voltage?

you could go in between by raising the baseclock by a Little, very little, VERRY LITTLE, WTF LISTEN TO ME VERY LITTLE,  Increase.

alright thanks a bunch I should have asked for a comparison or a personal example instead of just trying to further a question.

no, but you could make it thermal throttle, or not boot up. which degrades performance. 95 seems to be the limit altough i advise staying away from the 85 mark.
