Do I need to change the cpu thermal paste?

Hello!

Do I need to change the thermal paste if I'm just going to remove the cpu cooler, put the cpu into a new mobo and put the same cpu cooler back onto the same cpu?

Thanks! :)

Yes it should always be changed when the cooler is removed as it ensures no trapped air bubbles.

@UnlimitedTMD I'm just going to move the cpu and its cooler to a different motherboard, I'm not going to change the cpu cooler

But thanks for your reply!

Unless you're removing the cooler there's no need to reapply thermal paste. However you should reapply it every year or so for good measure, make sure it doesn't dry out.

@ThinkWithPortals Just checking... So if I just move the cpu and its cooler to another motherboard I don't need to change the thermal paste?

If you don't take the cooler off the CPU, no.

I'd really like to see CPU cooler which you don't need to remove in order to change mobos.

I would reapply paste. The risk of you touching paste and taking part of it off is too big. And also risk that some paste ends in new mobos pins.

How about a CRYORIG H5? I don't have to remove it to change my board. Nor do I with the 212 EVO in the office PC I built for a friend.

EDIT: Wow, I must be tired. RIP in peace, I meant you don't have to remove it if you change cases.

Really? I've installed Evo and know that its screwed with 4 screws which hold heatsink part with backplate. CPU is left inside those screws. You can't even lift retention plate which lock CPU in place without taking heatsink away.

Np. Sorry if I was being rough on you. Didn't know if you were true and serious like another user who claimed that 3rd wire of LED fans controls resistor for LED.

@W-L Hello!

What would you recommend for the removal of thermal paste? I looked up some info and found that a normal kitchen/toilet paper or a cotton bud would do just fine, no any chemicals needed. Is that true? Also I decided to buy the CM Hyper 212 Evo because why not :D

Thanks! :)

Ideally using >70% isopropyl alcohol is best as it helps clean off the surfaces thoroughly including the metal baseplate of the cooler.
