So, I have the generic Athlon 860K, R7 370 PC, and now the time comes for upgrades. I have three plans, and was wondering which ones would benefit real world power the most.

  • FX-8350 + new mobo
  • Haswell i5 (maybe 4440 or 4590) + new mobo
  • Upgrade GPU (Maybe 960 or R9 380)

The worst gamer, in the world

Still haven't got past the first world of Super Mario Galaxy 2

R9 380 would get you the best performance improvement. It's around 15% faster than a 960 and has better DX12 support

Depends, I assume you prefer gaming? GTX 960 due to Nvidia's driver lower CPU overhead since you have a weak 4 core processor.

A 380 would be fine with the Athlon - unlike FX, per-core performance is not as terrible.

would there be a bottleneck with a 960-class GPU, and a (sorry, Athlon) really not-that-powerful CPU?

The Athlon can easily run the 380, it's not THAT weak. Performance of the 860K is around the same as an i5 2320 in QC tests. Ask @Prysin for exactly what you can expect

What if a 390X was paired with the 860K? Would there be any form of stuttering in CPU heavy games like The Division & GTA 5?

Of course there would be a bottleneck - the 390X is a different class of GPU. As for stuttering, no idea.

max i would pair the 860k with is a 380x, the 390x will be bottlenecked by it. get at least a i5 or i7 of any generation for a 390x.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

What i would do, depending on the upgrade plans budget.

A) Get a GTX 960

B) Get a Core i3 6100 with a Z170 board and 2666MHz DDR4 RAM

C) Later on get a AMD Polaris or Nvidia Pascal GPU.

D) Get a Kaby Lake i5
