Hey guys,

I recently switched form a 8350 to a 6700k. The 8350 had some thermal problems but I always assumed it was a problem with the chip, not my custom loop with a 480 radiator. But sadly that's not the case. The 6700k runs at around 70c at stock and 90c at 4.5ghz 1.33v. I only have it and a 980 ti in the loop. It doesn't look like a problem with the loop either as the 980 ti Runs at around 50c full load. A lot of people told me that my Alphacool CPU block is crap and I need to get an EK Supremacy Evo and I did... but that made the temps EVEN worse.... I really don't know what to do. I upgraded from my 8350 because it died, I really don't want this i7 to die too but at the same time I wanna overclock it... Any suggestions? What could it be? My motherboard is an Asus Z170-A

Thanks.

The cooler is most likely mounted wrong on the chip.

Look around the edges, push on it a bit, and see if the block is loose (if it's loose, remount it)

Take it off, see if the thermal paste is evenly distributed on the CPU

What thermal paste are you using?

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

I remounted it 2 times. I use the paste that came with the block. It's the Gelid OC Extreme or something like that

Stupid question, but did you take the plastic off the waterblock?

Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but you dont know why. In this computer, theory and practice are combined: Nothing works and i dont know why.

Atleast i can manage Some things, like my current OC personal best.

What component is the "next" after the radiator, and have you flushed the radiator thoroghly?

Could be debree building up in the cpu block.

The waterblock is one day old :P. It goes from res to pump to gpu to cpu to rad to res again

But did you flush the rad?

In any case, this is, in my eyes, one ridiculously weird issue.

Try using a different cooler like a cheap 212 EVO and if the temps are fine there, your loop is shit.

What pump are you using?

By the way, it doesn't get any better than the EK Supremacy Evo.  Good choice.

About 28c at idle and 50-55c under full load at 1450mhz

What are your ambient temps like? 50-55c on a 980 TI In a custom loop is actually quite warm, that means your water temps are up in the 40-45 degree range most likely.

It is manual adjustment and set on max speed.

Yeah, flow isn't your problem then.  If your GPU's idle temp is 28c, that means your loops is hovering right around that temp with no load.  That's a little higher than normal, but nothing too crazy.

Tell us more about your overclock setting.  Manual voltage, offset and stuff like that.

Even if you loop's idle temp is okay, you could still have a big problem with load temps if your fans and radiator aren't do a good enough job of pulling that heat our of the water.

I use SP120s at 2350RPM. Sounds crazy but I dont mind the extra noise. I left everything alone in the bios minus the voltage and multiplier.
