I am looking at a RAID setup that will be external so when I leave home I can disconnect it, and throw it in a fireproof safe. I will be using HDDs and slowly moving to SSDs when money becomes available. I am willing to spend some money but I don't have an account with 5,000 dollars waiting to be spent. I need a reasonably priced external enclosure capable of decent speeds, that can be turned off, disconnect and put into a fireproof safe when I will be away from home. This RAID system will be used strictly by me, the other user will be using the cloud to store data (photos, music, etc.) Thank you in advance.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

 

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.

Honestly, if you're so concerned about your data being in a fireproof safe, you really might want to just consider buying a cloud solution...if you are stuck on this then I'd recommend a small NAS (store bought, @Captain_WD) and shutting it down/storing it safely when you leave.

Are you looking for a simple external case with RAID support or something more like a NAS? How much storage space are you looking to get? What speeds and level of redundancy are you looking for? Any RAID type in mind in particular? Any budget limits?
