6700k vs 4790k

So im going to build a gaming pc soon and im thinking what cpu! Should i go for 4790k or a 6700k? i can decide! I will be doing gaming and streaming! it will be paired with the pascal version of the 970!

What is the price difference? I would get the 6700k, or even the 5820k if budget allows it

Go with 4790k bro because it cheaper and you can overclock more. The 4790k come with factory boost to 4.4GHz, so get this thing to run at 4.7GHz will be no trouble at all with 3rd party cooling.

To get i7-4790k run at 4.7GHz is going to be easy, while the i7-6700k require more time to get it running at 4.7GHz.

I'd personally just go for the i7 5820k, since it has 2 more cores. It'll do better in the long run tbh.

Is up to you whether you want to go with the latest tech or 1/2 generations behind. The 4790k will not going to disappointed you at all, and you know the fact is impossible to catch up with latest tech while Intel and others release new tech every 2 months or so.

It does not work like that, maybe the 4790k won't even reach 4,5 Ghz and the 6700k reaches 5 Ghz, every chip is different

 But 400MHz factory boost is good. Plus is free overclock from Intel.

advertised clock speeds doesnt apply to overclocking AFAIK

The mobo im getting can auto overclock to at least 4.5 ghz

Mew cpus is suppose to come this season so might want to wait and see existing ones will most likely be cheaper though.

Well, my 4790k runs at 4.4GHz boost on Maximus VII Hero mobo, so I will take that as a free overclock from Intel.

4.7 is a medium OC on a 6700K. And they are 2 different architectures. Think, an FX 8350 is at 4 GHzs, but a 3.4 i3-4170 performs generally better. Clock speed isn't everything

It's not much more for an i7 5820k setup, and if you plan on keeping it for a few good years, it'll do better in the long run with DirectX 12.

architecture difference isn't enough to say one over the other. 

 

I would say this choice generally comes down to what you currently have to reuse and what the price difference will be.

24 responses and OP still actually hasn't gotten a answer to the question, you lot are pretty ridiculous.

Get the 6700k, it is faster clock for clock than the 4790k or 5820k, supports DDR4 higher speed RAM which does make a difference in a few select games (Witcher and GTA) and it isn't a gen behind.

Unless you already have a Z97 Mobo, DDR3 laying around or just want to save a tiny bit of money

An exception is if you want to do CPU intensive tasks such as Streaming, Rendering, VMs ect, then get the 5820k, but if gaming is your thing Skylake.
