General Question about cabling

How would this be done just curious and what would need to be required to do this?

This would be a easiest way of doing it, but may also require the IP's of the two systems to be configured:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/connect-two-computers-crossover-cable#1TC=windows-7

In most cases a crossover cable is all that is needed but check to see if the ports on the boards support it autosensing or the option to have a crossover mode, if it does then a regular ethernet cable will work.

Is there any type of cable that will connect two computers together via USB 3.0 or Ethernet cable? I want a wire connecting my home server and my my main desktop together if possible.

Thanks.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

Thanks.

You can setup a direct connection to your server and Desktop by using a cross over ethernet cable or setup the port as crossover as many boards so support that now.

Okay I'll look into it more when I do my builds. Thanks tho.

Just fyi, cross-over cables haven't been needed in "standard systems" for a decade.

Auto MDI-X was introduced in 1998....

And you only need one of the two systems to support it.

So honestly in the absence of documentation the sensible statement is to assume they aren't needed.

Well I just don't want to go from my internet to the router back to my file server. I would much rather go from my computer to the file server locally. Just a thought if not I can do the other way just seemed simplier is all.

You can. Just use any old ethernet cable. I'm doing it right now.
