Is it ok to take the fan off the stock heatsink of an AMD 2650? What will my temps be? This is the build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ion529/saved/#view=fJT6Mp

Current Build: CPU - AMD 5800K 4.2GHz w/ Stock Cooler :( | Motherboard - ASRock FM82A88 Extreme 4 Plus | Memory - Crucial 8GB Single Stick 1600MHz | GPU - AMD Radeon R7 260X 2GB | Storage - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM

what? No.

You could probably run it passivley with a decent cooler though. Like a 212 evo or sometihng.

Definitely not great, why would you do that anyway?

its only 25W tho I would have thought that's ok especially if the heatsinks still on

Arctic alpine M1 Passive ← @FloRolf

And if you're going AM1, take everything but a 2650

CPU wise is as shitty as a J1800

I would have thought that that passive cooler (looked at it on google images) would have done the same job as the stock heatsink without a fan? And the reason i'm going with AM1 is cus its super cheap but if there is a much better one that's about £10 more expensive I guess i'll take it. (I'm building a small web and file server)

Not really, if you plan fully passive then I doubt the stock heatsink would do it.

  • You're already diminishing it's "passive" cooling capacity, as there are areas where simply the heat can't move up (ex.: fins that stay under the heatsink and lateral fins). This strongly applies for vertical mb mount.
  • Not enough area for heat transfer. Yep. That's why the M1 is like 7 cm

An example with similar TDP are Pentium III, sometimes they're cooled passively and if you look at those heatsinks you'd see how similar they're to the M1

BTW, there're 2 models of the M1: Passive and Active, don't mistake them :P

Yea I was just thinking about the lateral fins after I posted it :P In the case i'm building in apparently the fan on the front is quite noisy, do you think I would be better off using an active heat sink on the CPU and just disconnecting the front fan or can I get away with just a heat sink and no case fans? Also you were saying how terrible the 2650 was so any suggestions?

Any step on the other 3 AM1 CPUs (Sempron 3850, Athlon 5150 or 5350 (the last ones even run at higher frequency)) and you're effectively doubling compute performance, as they've 4 cores of the same architecture vs 2

Also if your case has vent holes in the top you'd go fully passive

Alright updated part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ion529/saved/#view=fJT6Mp

Will the holes in that case do?
