Used 980 or new 970?

Hello all, so recently I purchased the system that I have specified in my profile for around $250 all in. I don't want to spend more that $600 altogether, but I want my pc to be able to be VR ready. Therefore I need a 970 or higher.

Should I buy this:

that one on ebay will end up at a much higher price since it's got over a day left until the auction ends, probably closer to 400 or over

Get a new 970. You never know how old the used 980 will be and if it was dropped or something happened to it. Play it safe and get a MSI GTX 970 4GB <-- In MY OPINION, that is the best card out there!

It's a direct return RMA from EVGA, no issues.

 

@mhc柯秦武 Get the used 980, although it's an auction. I wouldn't bid more than 375USD.

If you can find a used 980 in good condition,preferably one you can test, go with it. If not the 970 isn't bad.

if you can afford to wait around, EVGA has a B-stock page where they sell re certified cards with a 1yr warranty I believe.  980's usually go for between 360-400USD on there.  I've gotten one of them and it was immaculate.  There is no way to tell when they will have 980's back on there though since its pretty random

hmm, I am going to wait and see how this auction turns out. And if turns out poorly I might just wait and watch the EVGA b-stock page until something turns up. Thanks for the advice!

get the 980. it's perfectly fine for your computer nothing bad about it no damages and it's a notch more powerful than the 970 for only $10 more THAT'S A GOOD BARGAIN

look at the other listing and newegg a 980 is going for closer to $400 even $500 and that one is in mint condition directly from EVGA, take the bargain like it's only $10 more which again is a GOOD BARGAIN

Dude. EVGA B-stock page has a GTX 970 SC+ ACX for $249.99. I say that's a steal.

Unlike 390x vs 390 where performance different is marginal because of AMD driver bottleneck, the difference between a good oc 980 vs good oc 970 is pretty big. Couple with gimped VRAM on the 970 make +$60 on 980 totally worth it imo.

If you can get a 980 at a good price, DO IT. I did. No regrets, absolutely love it.  

 

980 is quite a bit faster than a 970, has a full 4GB Vram  and most of them overclock very well (1400+) putting them only about 15% behind a reference 980Ti.
