I know that many people have asked this already but it'd be good if I could get an answer that is more specific to me.

I need help choosing a low-powered CPU to run on my home server. I currently have a good enough server running but $3000 a year is a bit much xD. I don't have a particularly strict budget but if it isn't very expensive then that's good.

Server OS: FreeNAS 9.1.1-release

RAID: 4 2TB WD Red NAS drives in raid 10

Server uptime: 24x7 (preferably)

Intended uses for the server:               Note: Please allow for any TWO of these operations to be happening at once

Backing up photos, videos, music and rips up to the dlna-enabled folder

Downloading a torrent to the dlna-enabled folder

Streaming 1080p video from the dlna-enabled folder

Streaming music from the dlna-enabled folder

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

For this use-case, you could get away with an Intel Atom lol. I have an atom server doing pretty much the same stuff (but with RAID 5 instead of RAID 10, and using Ubuntu (I'm lazy and already knew how to use that) instead of freenas), and I've been surprised with how well it handles it.

A nice side-effect of using the atom was that it runs fanless so I can have it in my uni room a few feet away from the bed and still sleep since the only sound it makes is that of the drives spinning.

Maybe a Intel Haswell Pentium G3220 it's $69 and takes advantage of Haswell's power saving capabilities.

My Current Rig: CPU: i7 4790k @ 4.8Ghz CPU Cooler: H100i MOBO: Gigabyte Z97X SOC GPU: XFX Radeon HD 7950 Tahiti pro (Died 6/07/2014 RIP) & PowerColour HD7950  GPU Cooler: NZXT G10 W/ Corsair H55 HDD&SSD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB + Corsair GS 128GB + Samsung 840 EVO 250GB PSU: Corsair RM 750 Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2.

I would get the new Intel pentinum on haswel. It's the 3220 and its 3.0ghz and its 54w tdp. Hope this helps.

Wow. That's pretty cool. Seeing as it's probably going to be in my room, I guess noise is a small factor. If the atom can do the job fine then I'll have a look. Maybe thinking of the cheap haswells though due to the new low power state. It'd also perform a bit better than the atom and is still acceptable for my budget.

Thanks

a much better alternative

uses much less power than i3s or celeron and many times faster than an atom (its ivy bridgebased)

two intel NICs much better than realtek

I +1 this :P

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

Yeah, people like to hate on the Atoms but I think they're great for file servers. When you consider that they're many times more powerful than what you find in most NAS's (a pre-built NAS which uses an Atom is considered quite the powerhouse xD) it's hard to see what you'd need to additional processing power of a full-on desktop CPU for. I do all the media encoding on my 4770k, then stick the files on the server so they can be streamed everywhere else. Since the playback is done on the client device, all the Atom needs to be able to do is send the data out.

Check out the Jetway Atom boards from Logicsupply if you want to see what I'm on about, but that link from Kuzma isn't a bad option either (the only real differences are that it uses a fan and has full PCIe instead of mini-PCIe really).
