I'm hoping to get a critique of my planned build.  PC partpicker was used to compile this but I'd rather get opinions on this that a program can't give

mb gigabyte GA 710x=ud5  LGA 1151

CPU I5-6400 2.7 ghz quad

ram 2 kits of 2x4 ddr 4 2133

MSI GTX 970 4 gb twin frozr

Fractal Design Define R5

Coolermaster 750W 80+ gold

asus m279Qblack 27" 144hz widescreen 2560x1440

Periphials and 480gb crucial ssd from previous  pc

I'm planning to do some gaming, as well as general production.  At the price I decided to do a bit of overkill rather than deal with a throttle.  And yes that is i selected 2 kits of 2x4gig sticks.  (would have preferred a kit of 4x4gb but those weren't available.  I was wanting to go with a  Samsung S29E790C 60Hz 29.0" Monitor but i realized it's only 60 hz and the price went up.

Looks like a solid gaming build(that's what I'm assuming this is for since you've got a gaming graphics card on the parts list). My only critique is that the power supply looks a bit overkill for the components. You could likely get away with a 500 or 600 watt power supply but there's no harm in leaving some head room for future improvements.

CPU: Get the i5 6500. For a small price increase, you'll get a big boost in base clock speed (and a small increase in boost clocks). Well worth it the $25 price premium.

Motherboard: Why are you wasting so much money on a Z170 motherboard when your CPU isn't overclockable? You'll be perfectly fine with something like the Gigabyte GA-H110M-A.

RAM: Good choice.

GPU: Get the R9 390. Double VRAM without any segmentation nonsense, slightly better DX11 performance, significantly better DX12 performance.

Case: One of the best. ^_^

PSU: Is it the CoolerMaster VSM 750W? It's an excellent power supply, but it's WAAAY overkill for your build. Something like EVGA 500W 80+ is just fine.

Monitor: Is that the Asus MG279Q? That's a FreeSync monitor! FreeSync only works with AMD GPUs.

That's my critique. :)

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

Expansion? Like a dual GPU or you're thinking of recycling the PSU in future builds?

What did Linus say exactly? You don't floor your car? What?

Doesn't make any sense. :S

Wow.  Thanks for the help.  This is the sort of thing that i was hoping for.

CPU: I'm sold on this

MB: I'll check this out.  Need to make sure i have the things i want.

GPU/monitor: at first i planned to get the samsung 29" (not freesynk) but had also mis-remembered the facts as nvidia doing that.  (also had a thought that amd video card is propierity to amd (ie tying me into those boards/cpus)

Case: was going between that and the 440 (can't remember the brand)

PSU: I'll think that over, but not sure if addt'l cards etc will be added.  (this is an over reaction to a build i did a while back where the crappy psu took out the whole system

Nope.  Just that you don't run your car (etc) at full capacity all the time.  I know that even the PSU you recommend is 2x what is actually needed.

Yeah you don't, unless you want speed tickets :P. Other than that, it's completely fine.

And nope. peak system power consumption is estimated at 435 watts, while I'm recommending you a 500W power supply. It's simply because the EVGA one is very good while being very cheap.

Also, do i need additional cooling on the cpu?

I'd recommend so, because the stock cooler is very noisy. If you're fine with that, then don't change.

OH and does that case have good clearance?  One of the comments about the cooler is that it's on the large side.

The Define R5 has enough room for a Hyper 212. Shouldn't be a problem.

PCPartpicker should automatically detect incompatibilities if there were one, but I double checked builds using that cooler. It fits just fine. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Silly question here but this is my first time using a non stock cpu cooler.  I recall someone mentioning using the stock fan to test outside the case before installing inside.  How do I get the thermal compound to release so i don't damage my cpu when taking the stock fan off?

Many years ago i had a cpu that was ruined cause i pulled off the fan and the cpu came off with the retention arm still closed.

Thermal compound to "release"? What do you mean?

You can just wipe it off with alcohol and/or a cleaning agent.

Did you mean taking the stock heatsink off the CPU? Then watch this.

That is good to know.  Thanks again for your help.  It's possible this is enough to prevent damage.

About a decade ago (or more?) I had a cpu that got it's pins bent because it came out when i pulled up on the fan.  Also the pc had been used for over a month when this happened (while i'm talking about 5 minutes of use).

I'm having difficulty trying to confirm my pc is posting.  I have it built on my table (wood) with only 1 stick of ram in different slots and i'm sure my power connectors are fully seated.  The cpu fan does turn on, though that doesn't confirm post.  The only thing else i can think of is defective part?  I don't have extras to do swap outs

I'd have to rebuild to do that.  i've been testing on my dining room table or on the motherboard box and with cat and kid i don't like having my parts out on the table when i'm not around.

I think some of the pins on the motherboard are bent, though will take to a pc store to confirm
