im running an oc on my 4690k @4.2ghz

the multiplayer is set to 42

core voltage is 1.116v

cooling was not an issue as playing games the cpu only hit a max temp of 48c

playing games and using the cpu a lot was not making it crash but when i watched youtube videos and just browsing the webs it was crashing, i got no BSOD the screen just went black and then rebooted

My speakers dont even fit on or under my desk...PA's FTW

If it crashes its unstable, have you done a proper stability test (running Aida64 on everything for 30 minutes for example)?

i ran aida64 for about 20 mins with CPU, Ram, and gpu stress and then ran cinebench. after that i played gta and mad max for about 2 hours and it seemed fine but like i said its only when im not putting that much load on the cpu

Kind of odd that it doesn't crash while gaming but if you boost your vcore a bit and it fixes the issue than it's definitely CPU stability that's the problem. That vcore is pretty low.

yeah i thought it was strange too, im going to boot the vcore upto 1.13 and see how that goes

Monitor your cpu in cpuz while your browsing etc,

if you still have power saving features on and your pc is changing the voltage and clockspeed  when not under full load then that is probably your Issue.

as you said that is just reminded me of something, the cpu constantly runs at 4.2ghz but in aida the cpu core voltage drops below 1v when under low usage

Wow, I run AIDA64 for approx 1-2 hours to test stability, before running other tests too... 20 mins is too short IMO.

Yeah, good luck hunting down that one stupid setting that is called something different this time in your bios. If your board has one try an optimized overclocking default setting, those usually disable that stuff.

I did find this in the bios under the advanced cpu core settings btw I'm using a gigabyte mobo

Do you have "adaptive voltage" turned on?

My ASUS Z87-pro offers that and it allows the voltage to vary.  You might consider turning it off and seeing if that makes a difference.

I have a i7-4770K running at 4.4GHz overclock on water cooling at 1.2v and it is stable 24/7.  I personally suspect your voltage is just too low, but I haven't done enough overclocking to say with any certainty.
