What do you do when you start a forum and noone responds

Depends on the length of time that it's been dead for. If it's been dead long enough, we sometimes allow bumping.

So I have posted a few forums lately and usually they start out with a lot of people commenting but then the forum just dies and none of the old commenters comment again even after they have asked me a question. Am I supposed to refresh it or something, or just make a new forum?

Quick terminology correction here. What you're referring to is a thread. The forum is the medium, where the sub-forums are all the little sections.

It depends on the topic and how much people have to say. If people stop responding to other people, it just kinda gradually dies.

"It pays to keep an open mind, but not so open your brain falls out." - Carl Sagan.

"I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you" - Edward I. Koch

okay thanks so much man

One thing is that you should quote people you are replying to. Many don't check threads if they don't see notification for it. You can also quote to multiple people on one post with multiquote (plus sign ).

Just for some clarification in case you don't know. Bumping

essentially means that you post another comment in the
same thread, to push it back to the front page of the section

the thread is in.

This is only allowed if there is still discussion to be had and

noone has responded for more than 24 hours, and not

necessary unless the thread is in an active section where

the thread has fallen off the first page.

As LoGiCalDrm said, quoting the person you are responding

to is really handy to make sure they see it.

If they don't respond when you answer their question, maybe

they didn't have anything to add with the new information.

Maybe they haven't seen it yet, or they are just too lazy to get

back to it.. Could also be that it is a tricky subject and you

won't get more activity, who knows. You can try to bump it

though, but the thread will die by itself eventually.
