775 socket

Asus p5kpl-am epu Board (only board lying about) and a 760gtx lol

and still no memory, psu, cpu (well i have a E5300 but thats not good its a bit slow) just wondering what the best / cheapest options you all suggest

or is it cheaper to start with new board all together

that board only takes DDR2...you'd be better off getting a new one, honestly. even if it's a budget end micro atx board and you throw in a i3, it'd be a better idea then using that board.

The cheapest option would be to get your hands on a used Core 2 Quad CPU, which, when overclocked, will pair nicely enough with a GTX 760.

The only problem is that your motherboard only has 2 DDR2 RAM slots, and no ECC memory support, which means you can't get more than 4 gigabytes on there.

so is it worth looking for a 775 socket board with ddr3 capable ?

If you can find one that takes 4GB sticks and supports Core 2 Quad CPUs, sure. I think DDR3 support was pretty widespread on P45 and X48 motherboards.

This doesn't look like it's standard form-factor to me.

Why not just try and find a DDR2 motherboard with 4 RAM slots (to accommodate 8GB of RAM)? They're usually pretty cheap, and are often bundled with the aforementioned 8GB of memory. You could probably fit in a Core 2 Quad, a case, a power supply, and a hard drive for $150.

Alternatively, this is a lot more powerful, but does come to $100 more.

It depends on what you can find. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 is the most common and widely-available quad-core LGA775 CPU out there, but your motherboard supports anything up to a Core 2 Quad 9550.

Try getting a cooler and overclocking the processor if you can- it yields significant performance benefits and will reduce the bottleneck on the GTX 760.
