Hey, I have come up with a strange idea and I want to know if it will work.

 

Some old laptops use the socket LGA 1366, such as the Dell Precision m4500 and m6500.  This socket is famous now for having some cheap CPUs available on ebay.  Let's say I buy one of these laptops and replace the i5 or i7 CPU with one of the low TDP Xeons for the same socket.

Only 40 watts, but nearly twice the performance of the i5-520M you find in the laptops you find on ebay. 

Will it work?  Or will the BIOS say "no way man, what the fuck is this shit?

you should compare the TDP of the two chips on ark first, see if they are the same, and it should work but i'm not 100% sure

 

(most laptop cpus use way less than 40 watts and the laptop cooling system might not be able to handle that

there's a chance this might happen because the bios of a laptop might be custom made for that cpu

 

but then again some laptops have several varieties of cpu so i dont see why it wouldnt work

but you should really consider just buying a new laptop or something lol

There are some m6500s on ebay with i7 extreme CPUs in them.  They call for a TDP up to 55 watts.

The Xeon L5630 is well below that with 40 watt TDP.

Maybe I could even push it 60 watt TDP for a lot more power?

are you sure laptop has LGA 1366 socket?

laptops usually have BGA or FPGA sockets

The laptops you listed are from the old rPGA (Pin Grid Array) sockets, I believe the m4500 and m6500 are rPGA989. It's not an LGA 1366 socket board, not sure where you got that info. The best CPU you could socket into those boards would probably be an i7-640M, but it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

yuh, exactly this

 

most desktop cpu nowadays have a flat surface under the cpu

mine (2630qm) have needles like an AMD chip, you might wanna double check too

It's an error. 
Now I'm on ebay looking at laptop motherboards with Socket 1366/Socket B.  There are some for Toshiba Satellite series, but again the photos don't look right.

Oh, OK. Well that's a mistake then. Those laptop sockets in Ebay aren't LGA1366 either.You can tell an LGA socket by the pins and the retention arm(s) in it. None of the other sockets have them.

You can of course look for photos, read through pages of wikipedia, learn about the sockets..

 

...or you could just google any CPU model that comes with particular laptop from the factory and you'll know the name of the socket (-s) instantly.
