i am a little embarrassed to have to ask this question. but it has been YEARS since i have burned a disk. and the last one i did was on a Vista machine, not windows 10. back then, if memory serves me correctly, i had to finalize the disk before it could be read by another machine. but i could be confusing it with a Panasonic DVD recorder we used to have. anyway, is that something that still needs to be done?

Maybe. Maybe not. It's not really about the machine/OS you use to burn the disc. It's about the one that reads it. Some players can handle non-finalized discs. Some still can't. AFAICT, all PCs can handle them just fine these days. You should be able to leave it, try it and then come back to finalize it if necessary if you use Windows File Explorer to burn the disc.

I don't see a single thing that will make you embarassed for not burning a CD in years. Even tho I still use optical media on a regular basis, it has some drawbacks that I can't stand (not being able to erase them, cheaper SD cards and USB sticks etc.)

I have heard of verifying, not finalising a disc. Maybe I'm wrong.

You will need to finalize CD/DVD for getting it work anywhere else than burning software. Or if you use software which allows multi-session, close session.
