My LGA 1155 motherboard can only go up to an i7 3770k which is what most people here recommended to me so far.

However I already decided that if I do upgrade I'm going from scratch on a new build. Newer motherboard, architecture etc.

In hindsight though I realize that there were better options than the i7 3770k.

The Xeon E3 1290 V2 would have been even better than the i7, just without the integrated graphics which isn't a problem anyways because I use a dedicated graphics card. Would this have been a feasible option if I had gone that route?

Yeah, I found that the Xeon E3 1275 v2 has the same specs as the 3770K, and it is much much cheaper. Go the Xeon route, just update the BIOS to the latest version.

why are you upgrading? need more performance? in games or other workloads? (i doubt the 3770k cant game well)

Planetside 2, one of my favorite PC games is very CPU intensive. So it is a bit performance. I mean I have been using this processor for I think 4-5 years now. I'm amazed how well and hard it's worked for me these few years. Also as someone who didn't actually go inside a computer until late last year It's been an exciting adventure learning what everything does and the market around it. I havn't had so much fun learning something since I hit a trove of WWII books, documentaries and games. I've been using all these same parts you see in my sig as spares, hand me downs and stuff salvaged from broken computers for the last few years.

I'm probing the market, and looking at future releases from the red, blue and green teams to determine just the right time and place to get what I need to build a computer I can truly claim was my doing. That isn't to say my computer still isn't trucking along, but a lot of games, not only Planetside2 (which is 4 years old) won't run max graphics on my computer. My GPU is the biggest offender. I'd like a new one like my younger brother's R9 390. He uses a similar processor to mine (can't remember what model) and he still deals with bottle necking. That's another reason for wanting a new CPU at the same time as GPU. Thing is if I do get an AMD GPU like my brother I may as well wait until some of AMD's upcoming stuff like Zen architecture and CPU.
