So here's the deal I have an Sapphire R9 290x 8GB VRAM. When i purchased it I planned to one day buy a second and run them together. I started looking online for one and find the lowly price of $375 I paid for this car in June 2015 is no longer to be found instead I find a new card available for $817.95
Whats a guy to do.... I heard I can run any R9 290x as long as i maintain the 8GB of VRAM then I will have the boost in processing power I want without sacrificing VRAM capacity.

so all that said simple question i think is. Can I use any r9 290X W/8GB of vram, or do I need the exact same card (see attached PNG)

It can be any GPU that uses the same architecture IIRC. You're not as locked down as you are with Nvidia, where it has to be the exact same GPU and vRAM.

So basically, yes. Any 290X with 8GB vRAM will work with it, regardless of vendor, cooler or clock speed.

I guess you should be able to cross a R9 390X with it.

Any 8GB 290X would do. In fact, I think a 390/390X would also work. AMD aren't nearly as strict as NVIDIA are when it comes to multi-GPU configurations.

If you want to maintain your 8GB VRAM buffer, then you need to pair with second GPU with 8GB of VRAM.

Any other card using the "Hawaii" architecture WILL work. This includes

  • R9-290
  • R9-290X
  • R9-390
  • R9-390X
  • (R9-295X2...but only 4GB per GPU core)
