I am currently running an intel i5 3450 (socket 1155) and the highest clock i have seen it as is 3.8 GHz i have not overclocked it at all so it must be turbo boost on ark.intel.com it says the max frequency is 3.5GHz from my knowledge this cpu was made before the "K" marketing strategy took effect.

I am currently look at getting either the i5 4460 or i5 6400 or the i5 6500 does anyone have any suggestions or comments regarding these cpu's?

I play many games including rust, Tom Clancy's the Division and Kerbal Space Program all very CPU and GPU intensive games.

What mobo is the CPU on? I've seen some mobos overclock for you even if you didn't ask for it, but usually they don't go above rated turbo speed. They just get 4 cores at max turbo speed, not the 1 that is intel standard. Also the K cpus were introduced before that. I'm not sure how early, but certainly the i7-2600k was a popular model.

The "K" naming scheme for unlocked Processors were available since the first-generation Core series. For an example, the Core i7-875K.

Second generation had the i7-2600K, i7-2700K, i5-2500K, and i5-2550K.

Third-generation had i7-3770K, and i5-3570K.

You will need a new motherboard for any of the CPUs you mentioned. The i5-6500 and i5-6400 will require a new motherboard AND new DDR4 memory.

If you are building a completely new system at this time and stage, go with 'Skylake' on LGA 1151.

anyone reading this i know the cpu (that i am currently using at this time) uses a different socket i have had it for 5 years

Impressive, considering it was released just under 4 years ago. ;)

To be honest I don't think there's much reason to upgrade it yet. Since you have a Z77 motherboard, you can overclock the CPU to 3.9 GHz, or a little more if you tweak the BCLK too.

this pc is getting on the unstable side and that is why i want to upgrade if i touch the overclocking bits it might not work my cpu adjusts its own clock accordingly i don't want it to fail on me (it really does seem i have had this pc for 5 years it did run windows xp at one point)

also if i play around with my ram (which i know all works) depending on the configuration of which ram stick goes in what slot it doesn't work properly as in windows wont boot
