Hello,

i'm thinking to buy a new box to replace my 7 years old PC, at last :-P

Im planning a 3 phase upgrade

I still have a box with 500 watt power supply to feed my phase 1 and 2

Phase 1:

Intel Core i3 6100 3.7GHz

Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3

Kingston DDR4 2x4GB 2600MHz

Phase 2:

Gigabyte GTX 970 WindForce

Phase 3:

Samsung M.2 PCIe x4 256GB NVMe SSD

NZXT S340 Black+Red

Corsair CS550M

Phase Later:

Add 8GB RAM

Switch to core i5

Tips and recommendations greatly appreciated :)

I'd just save up if you can wait better to buy everything at once, otherwise what's your total budget here? Do you only have a single 1080p display? as a 390/970 are a bit overkill for 1080p, and a 390 is going to be faster than a 970 overall anyways

Also how long is it going to be between upgrades? And what's your current PC? You could probably just get a low end APU rig to replace it while you save if gaming is your focus.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Sorry, i forgot to mention: no AMD at all! Its just personal) Intel + nVidia only
970 will give me minimum for VR (just in case)

You're going to need 2 980tis for proper VR, and it doesn't sound like you'd be getting a headset until maybe a year out as they all cost like 600 bucks+, and the vive looks the best overall, but I think that one is like 800? Can't remember

there's not much reason to get an nvidia GPU, given that at the same price the 390 outperforms it, more so at high resolutions, it has 125% more usable VRAM, and nvidia's current cards don't look to support DX12 very well, in the recent hitman game the 390 was as fast as a 980ti in DX12.

But ya, just save up your money man, AM4 should be out soon and that'd be a pretty solid platform to buy. if you really wanted to buy now with an APU you'd be gaming pretty well at 1080p with an A8 7650K + 2400mhz RAM at around 350 for a build in total, of course for the long term if you're willing to live with intel's iGPU which is not very capable outside of broadwell, you might be better off, but the FM2+ really isn't too bad for the money, and with an overclock the A8s can keep up with an i3 for the most part in most games.

plus you're going to be really bored those few months without a capable GPU unless you have one lying around.

also go for 1440p over 21:9 1080p

although there is a free-sync IPS display in that resolution, $279 not sure if there even is a G-sync version but it'd cost a fair amount more if it existed

So they do make a 21:9 1080p G-sync display, but it's a TN panel, that's 144hz, and it's like 34" and curved at $999, so ya, probably don't want that
