If you use your computer for more then just browsing the web, avoid using Jolicloud.

Ubuntu is your best bet for now. You may also want to look into Linux Mint, but for now Ubuntu is good.

Ubuntu and Mint are probably the best OS's for beginner Linux users.

OP, if you're a bit of a gamer, you might want to stick with Ubuntu because of Steam, some people have reported that Mint has some buggyness compared to Ubuntu when using Steam.

I won't really be gaming with this, since it can't even run minecraft. I usually just use it to bring it over to a friends house just to web browse/light photo editing.

I have a pretty similar netbook to you. I run linux mint 14 on it. Once it get's booted it's pretty quick when using it. I only use it for email and light web surfing while I fixing cars or something.

For a netbook, I recommend Linux Peppermint. It uses minimal resources and it's linux so...it's awesome :)

I use fresh Windows 7 install on my Samsung N130 since Linux doesn't have any drivers for my wireless :( It runs quite smooth all sites work fine apart from YouTube that is laggy also the fact that the resolution is a bit too small for some site can be a bit annoying. If your netbook works fine on linux then get something like Mint or Ubuntu. If you just want it to run as smooth as possible get something like Crunchbang (may be a bit strange to use for a beginner) or Puppy Linux.

My Samsung NC10 came with Windows XP but I have less then a year to find a new OS, would like to turn it in to a chromebook but not sure if its worth it, might have to get a new laptop or windows tablet running windows 8 (not RT) but might try some form of Linux

I would say that Elementary OS is the best distro for beginners. It's Ubuntu based and has a way better WM.

  • 8 months later...

Hi guys, a late reply.. After trying the most of the ones written here, i must say that i found myself very well with elementary and mint, however since my school is demanding strange windows only proxy configurations, i have to stick with it... I'm planning on doing a dual boot with something really fast to boot and also really basic and i'm crying about jolicloud being changed to browser app, i would have installed it!

I'm downloading crunch and peppermint, i'll let you know ;)
