would it be a terrible idea to dissasemble old pc's for their parts and use those parts to build a pc. i saw some pretty good deals on craigslist and wondered if that would be a terrible idea. also would it be a terrible idea to use super crappy parts to do your first pc build to practice so when you are using parts that are actually worth something you dont break them?

if those parts are dirt cheap

i dont see why not

in fact, i recommend using crap parts as your first build if possible if you're really unfamiliar with hardwares

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Building a PC is like putting legos together. It's fairly easy and hard to break anything. Don't waste money on parts for a crap PC, just watch some videos and get tips for parts on this forum.

CPU - FX 8350 @ 4.5GHZ GPU - Radeon 5700  Mobo - M5A99FX Pro R2.0 RAM - Crucial Ballistix 16GB @ 1600 PSU - Corsair CX600M CPU Cooler - Hyper 212 EVO Storage - Samsung EVO 250GB, WD Blue 1TB

You could do it for a first build, just make sure the parts are compatible.

IMO the hardest parts to get on Craigslist that actually work are memory and motherboards.  I have been told straight faced that yes the (insert motherboard or memory here) works.  When I get home, I run the usual battery of tests (Memtest-86) or plug the CPU into the motherboard with a single stick of ram.  Nothing.  Always try to get a phone number and pick it up at the seller's house.

i have some old memory and an old motherboard. its not the best but it should work. next time have them use the ram and motherboard in front of you to test it.

What are the parts if you don't mind me asking.  What are you planning to do with the computer when it's built?

i cant tell you what the motherboard is because its at my grandparents house but the ram is 2 gigs of ddr3 ram. i just want to practice building a pc so when i build a pc with parts worth something i dont break anything.

Help prevent #1 by installing CPU and memory before installing it into the case.  Also, make sure that the motherboard standoffs in the case are properly aligned with the screw holes on the motherboard.  I fried an H61 board and video card trying to fix this issue while the power was still connected.
