Hi,

So my current rig is intel (3770k) and nvidia (gtx 780), the cpu works just fine but I don't feel like I need such power (it just begins to age a bit so it's not really a high end cpu for gaming anymore). Nvidia is more tricky, the card delivered amazing perfs until 9xx series settle for a bit, I get lesser perfs for the exact sames games, not just over the months but each time I get a new driver I feel my card is going down a bit. I checked a bit online and find out that lot of people were complaining about nvidia delivering unoptimized drivers for older - yet flagship - cards; sorta like apple does for the iphone or samsung for the galaxy.

For now the rig works just fine for my expectations (60 fps 1080p), tho I know in one year maybe two I'll need to change it to keep up with my display setting (I might also upgrade to 120/144hz 1080p/1440p).

So the aim of this topic is :

I don't need an amazing horse power since I don't play that much solo AAA title (my mains games are 4X, and some competitive online games such as csgo). I play 4x on ultra settings and competitive games on low, with a 1020x720 with black bars for csgo. But I want something quiet, not dead quiet as I wear a headset almost all the time, but quiet enough so I never hear my rig though my headset (the current one fails at this).

Is AMD more "worth it" considering I don't need extra cpu power (I don't steam or photoshop or video edit or w/e), my pc is only meant to run games and use office.
Is my appreciation of Nvidia screwing up older gpu true or pure fake, and it's just my gpu who's aging badly ? Are amd cards better for price to perf 1080p gaming ?

Please do no post benchmarks unless they are "in game" benchmarks, no one cares about valley, 3dmark, cpuidle; those are extreme situations only 0.1% experience on a somehow daily basis (oh and if you're the unique snowflake working at the CNRS needing a 1k2€ cpu for your daily work getting offended by my statement on benchmark, well... I do remember the last time I had sex, the question is do you ?).

Regards.

Don't ditch the 3770k. It's still a very capable gaming CPU, better than newer i5's. Keep that. As for the 780, I think as long as you're doing fine with your FPS at 1080p, you don't need to upgrade. A good upgrade would be an R9 Fury, even a 390x.

The 3770K is still a fine CPU and better than anything AMD offers at the moment. That may change in the future when Zen is released, however that is an unknown entity at this time.

Again, if you're only running 1080P the 780 will do fine for a while longer.

I do feel you would be downgrading by swapping the CPU to AMD, as for the GPU, I guess you could grab a 390 or Fury, but that would cost $300 - 500 depending on which card you grab. I don't think going from a 780 to a 390 is really worth, the vram is nice but you wont see that much more performance especially at 1080P. I would just stick with what you have for now.

If you upgrade the panel then you could grab a Fury and a Freesync 1440P monitor at the same time, but I would touch the CPU yet, I went from a 3770K to a 4790K (I damaged the memory controller delidding) and the jump wasn't worth the cost if the 3770K hadn't of been damaged

Hi,

Are you kidding? it would be a downgrade from the 3770k to any AMD processor, stick with the CPU you have! you would not even make money selling so its pointless to chagne

I game at 1440p just fine on my 780ti, playing most games at high/ultra at 60fps, i think your 780 should cope at 1080p just fine

A. AMD hasn't released anything "new" in terms of CPU in the last 4-5 years.

B. The i7 3770k is still relevant and still very powerful CPU. It only 5-10% slower then the 4770K & 4790K and anything newer from Intel while still beating out AMD's FX series.

C. The 780 is still very good for 1080P gaming, but if you really itching to switch side, go for the R9 390. R9 390x if you want a bit more performance, R9 Fury/Fury Nano if you have the money to throw away.

-The 3770K is still ballzy man, keep it

-Your appreciation is very much in place, my 760s are also struggling a bit at 1440p i have to turn down eye candy, with that said, if you are running that 780 highly overclocked till this day, it's going dude.

-I personally am considering two 960s now or a 390X, with that said, AMD has better price to performance on flagship cards while nvidia has it on mid range cards (witch why i'm considering the 960s ;) )

If you want to switch to an AMD CPU, wait for the release of their next generation to see if they have an offering that's better than your 3770K. That CPU should hold its own for gaming for quite some time though.

As for your card performing worse in AAA games than before, many Gameworks titles have exhibited decreased performance over time for pre-Maxwell cards. Try disabling Gameworks effects such as hairworks. This video elaborates on the matter.

For the cpu cooling I use a watercooling prefilled (hydro H60 if I recall it right)
The noisier thing in my rig is the gpu (never buying reference cooler again), that's mostly why I want to change it - after pascal and polaris lunch, buying right now seems meaningless.
I've made a lot of optimization mistake when I built this rig, since it was the first I bought and mounted.
I'm not really into overclocking tho, not really scared about harming my component in the short run but I feel in the long run it may cost your more since the gpu/cpu won't be in a good shape to reuse in another build.

The video explains well the experience I have with my card atm, it just feels its age.

As for the CPU, as long as this one does the job I won't change it; but the idea was more about a new rig - in one or two year - based on what exist right now and the trend amd/intel are following. I do indeed know intel cpus are better that's why you pay the price premium, tho strictly for gaming I feel they are not worth the cost and may consider AMD for a new rig, since in game perfs seems quite the same while amd offer way lower prices on mid range cpu (If I'm not saying bullcrap it seems to me that high end cpus are more and more "useless" for gaming perfs; mid range 100-200€ cpus seems the way to go [with ofc a 300-500€ gpu]).

So for now here are my options :

--> getting a kick ass monitor at 1440p with gsync or freesync (not interested in 4k for now) at 120ish fps then getting a polaris/pascal gpu (genral idea would be a 1060/1070 or equivalent on amd side depending on the display chosen)
-->sticking to my current display and getting a pascal/polaris  more capable and quieter card with a display upgrade in mind.

Do you guys have any advice on a monitor with this kind of specs ? (size must be between 27" and 29" with a price under 500€ (560$)

Gpu wise I'll keep it until this rig gets too outdated, and I'll be looking for a more price/perf cpu when I'll build another rig.
And if I'm not retarded another time I'll figure out how to have a quiet rig before building it.
