Well a xeon might offer more but I'm not certain how they stack up, but if you have a godly cooler then the FX9xxx would be good for video editing setting at $180

I'm looking at building a video editing system, and I'm really stumped on the absolute best CPU. I'm looking for AMD or Intel, just the best performance for editing under $200.

Thanks

two e5-2670s will be pretty powerful for the money. Thats if you buy them used. The mobo will be expensive though.

Anything that wouldn't require two cpus or liquid cooling?

Used Xeon or i7 from maybe Ivy Bridge. I mean it really depends on the video editing program. Some would work really well with an i5.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

And there, you have half a badass workstation.

the CPUs will be under $200. The motherboard will not, but you didnt specify a motherboard or its budget or if you had one and its socket type.

Yeah but those old xeon´s lack on certain instruction sets like avx2.0.

Which will realy be a benefit to have for rendering in particular.

If the render application can support it like adobe premiere.

So i would not realy concider those old Xeon´s as a realy good option.

Allthough for the price you cant complain.

But those Xeon's basicly come more handy for servers in which allot of paralel threads come handy.

i would say the i5-6500 + a decent gpu.

Honestly, while the 2.0 standard is a decent jump from the initial standard, it's nothing to write home about in my experience. My one E5-2680 ES CPU beats  my friend's i7-6700k in Cinebench and Handbrake tests, so doubling the number of cores at 100MHz less should still be an improvement. I understand Adobe handles the updated standard better, but I think that 2 E5-2670s should definitely beat an i5-6500 even in this instance.

It has been reported that there is only an 8% nominal increase from the AVX to AVX2.0 standard in most real world applications.
