what is a write to disk error?

Most likely it's been overloaded. Turn off the system and cool it down a bit.

Athlon X2 for only 27.31$   Best part lists at different price points   Windows 1.01 running natively on an Eee PC

My rig:

CPU: Intel Celeron (duh) N2840 2.16GHz Dual Core

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

HDD: Seagate 500GB

You can open your Task Manager and see what's using up your storage and memory causing the 100% loads. 
I'd also suggest checking the health of the drive with tools from the manufacturer as it may be malfunctioning pat putting your data in danger. A backup is also a good idea.
