Config 1 or 2 looks like the best bet. Can you tell what kind of storage they have (HDD, SSD?) Also, can you find out what power supply, motherboard, and case they have if possible? These, especially the psu, are important considerations to take into account when buying.

Hmmm, yea go for the first setup... But if you want newer stuff the 970 will perform very well also.

Main PC |CPU - i7-6700k|GPU - R9 290x tri-x 4gb|RAM - 16gb ddr4|MOBO - MSI z170 - A PRO|HDD - WD 1TB/240gb Sandisk |PSU - 700w Raidmax

Laptop |CPU - i7 4720hq|GPU - 960m 2gb|Ram - 8gb 2x4|Model - y50-70 Touch|SSD - 240gb Patriot drive|Display - 1920x1080 IPS touch

Alright, based on your needs, I would go for the R9 290x. It is pretty much neck to neck with the 970, and in these games is little better or a little worse than the 970, but each will give a great experience in gaming. The reasoning behind the 290x though is drivers. Something that Nvidia has been known to do, especially with their last generation 700 series cards is to cripple performance in drivers to encourage people to upgrade - something that might happen with a 970. AMD doesn't always get the best performance out of the gate with games compared to Nvidia, but almost always solve these issues with driver updates, and are much less likely to cripple performance through drivers.

I'd go with Config 2. You don't really need an i7 and

the GTX 970 > R9-290x.

[CPU: 4.7ghz I5 6600k] [MBAsus Z170 Pro G] [RAM: G.Skill 2400 16GB(2x8)]

[GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970] [PSU: XFX Pro 850W] [Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo]
[Storage: 500GB WD HDD / 128GB SanDisk SSD ] [Case: DeepCool Tessaract]

[Keyboard: AZIO MGK1] [Mouse: Logitech G303] [Monitor: 2 x Acer 23" 1080p IPS]
